Light as a Featherby AsocComment by Asoc: Focus stacking. Yes that is what it is called. This was the technique that I used. I tried to describe it but turns out I did just about as good of a job in describing it as I did with the actual technique. ;)
My problem was that with the lens flipped around (only way to get even close to the proper magnification) the depth of field was so small and I didn't get the pics with the focus in the exact right spot so there are a lot of holes that are completely out of focus.
Thanks Sid for the ideas. I have been striving to find the way to make shots more and more interesting and better composed so your tips are very appreciated! Message edited by author 2015-09-24 00:45:12. |

Light as a Featherby AsocComment by sidpixel: *Hello from Sid and the Critique club*
An interesting image that does meet the challenge.
Having read your comments I think you made the best job you could given the circumstances you were working under. This is obviously, as I'm sure you appreciate, not the best way of attempting this, your image has very little if anything of sharp enough focus and detail to appeal. There is another method you could have tried which I think would have been a lot easier and more successful it is called focus stacking. Basically you would have used the lens as normal with a small aperture you would take several images together each at a slightly closer position and then combined them together in PS to create an image that has sharp focus throughout.
I think you could have improved the composition of the image by using the diagonal for the stem of the feather this would have made the image more dynamic and interesting. A white or light background would have given you a high key image which would also have increased its impact and appeal.
Sorry you didn't get any comments during the challenge, I hope this makes up for it. Thanks for your submission, Sid |

Long Day On the Scooterby AsocComment by sidpixel: *Hello from Sid and the Critique Club*
A fairly straightforward shot that meets the challenge.
Your entry is a normal sort of portrait that feels as though the scooter has been included to conform with the challenge brief, in other words it not a particularly inspiring sort of shot to be honest. We are not able to see your eyes 'the window of the soul' and as such it leaves us feeling somewhat let down. The one redeeming quality is the quality of the light, taken during the golden hour it has given the image an appealing golden glow. I like your composition and the way you are looking into the empty part of the frame as opposed to being boringly stuck in the middle of the frame.
I think a more dynamic sort if image would have been to have taken a shot of you riding the scooter which may have fared better for you. It's a shame you didn't get any comments during the challenge, I hope this critique makes up for it, Sid. |

Stylin' on the Sidewalkby AsocComment by Teafran: The sense of "moment" is present in this image and the obvious character being captured carries some visual impact. Technically, it's a very well composed image which is a plus. From an artistic standpoint, it lacks impact. A worthy entry into the challenge just lacking that something special to make it stand out. |

Stylin' on the Sidewalkby AsocComment by JimiRose: This is quite snapshoty, the composition need a bit of tweaking, the putting the boy's face further up in the frame and getting the whole of the girl in the foreground's face in would have been great (you should try never to chop chins off portraits, tops of heads and parts of foreheads are ok but not chins!). Also I think it would have been better if the girl in the foreground was in sharp focus, and the boy OOF!. Hope this was helpful. |
