Hi Dawn, I read your post in the scores thread. First of all congrats on a nice finish in your first challenge. a plus 5 score first time out is pretty good!

What they are talking about with the curves adjustments is, in lightroom on the right side when in "develop" mode. It is called "tone curve" and allows you to bring the highlights out a bit more and make the shadows a bit darker. this will give your photo more "snap" to it and make the deer pop off the page better. I also agree with the idea of cropping it to make it a horizontal shot because of all the extra space at top and bottom which do not really add to the photo.

Your photo needs some cropping top and bottom, maybe it should have been shot landscape instead of portrait.
