Generally, the head/eye of a living creature is the key area of interest and should be in focus. However, in this image most of the bee is out of focus and dark.

Thanks all for the comments! FWIW, this is the image I was trying to emulate -- I figured with all the smoke/dust/whatever the original was a little blurry too.


Here is the ashtray I used -- I took the image pretty much edge-on in SuperMacro mode (lens virtually in contact with the subject), holding it up so the bulb from an overhead light fixture was shining through the glass:

Simply dramatic! And sad. Very sad. Ohio owns a number of those markers. . . especially Northeastern Ohio. We just buried a local soldier two days ago. And on the flip side, this represents uniformed personnel. I am thinking there are many more civilians and agents that are not in the count.
