No Cars Allowedby GeneralEComment by timj351: Critique Club critique
Well well, I get to critique one of your photos. Ok, where to start? : )
One of the first things that jumped out at me was how well you presented this photo. The cropping is very appropriate, the subtle border presents the image very well, and it is very clean and natural looking. As far as the photo content goes I find it fairly ordinary and without much punch. I feel it needs more visual appeal like dramatic lighting or a very unique perspective. Something that grabs the viewers attention. I would like to see what it looks like from a lower perspective so that it looks like the sign towers authoritatively over the bridge and didn't compete visually with the other vertical street lamps or in size and weight to the bridge. As it is now both the sign and bridge seem to compete for the primary focus point. As I said it very good technically and in it's presentation but it is lacking in visual appeal. I think this would have been a great opportunity for some greater visual risk taking.

Heaven's Gate?by GeneralEComment by kandyj: Nice composition. Might have liked this better if the window was lit rather than shadowed and the border a little more flat. |

Say...Cheese!by GeneralEComment by goodtempo: Critique Club critique:
Composition/Content: Great subject and a very creative way to "Say Cheese". I would like to have seen the cheese trimmed so it is not hanging and possibly shaped more like a smile, since this is the result you want when you ask someone to say cheese. The crop and framing is good.
Lighting: The lighting is a little unbalanced, with the warm natural light from the left and the cooler flash prominent on the right side of the face. The flash also shows some difficult shadows on the chin. I would like to have seen either a bounced flash, to make it softer, with a possibly a white reflector to fill in shadows, or, two natural light sources about 45 degrees on either side and in front of the subject. Either way, the lighting would be more even with softer shadows and the color would be more balanced.
Background: The background is not an issue and the shirt looks fine to me.
Camera Work/Technical: Good focus and exposure. I might have shot the picture with the camera a little higher than it is and pointing down a little to avoid the up-the-nose look.
Digital Processing: If you did any post processing it looks good because it's not overdone.
My Opinion: I think you have a great idea that could have been a great picture with a few adjustments as mentioned above. |

Heaven's Gate?by GeneralEComment by jimmyn4: This is a nice photo. The border compliments the colors in the photo well. I don't particulary like the shadows on the gate. I don't like the little bit of tree sticking out of the left side either. But since you can't just chainsaw a tree down maybe waiting until earlier or later in the day depending on the direction to get the sunlight lower and not cast the shadows. Just a thought, still a very nice photo. Good luck in the challenge. |

Square Shimby GeneralEComment by Turbotech: My personal oppinion is that the color here is not right, but that is just me. I can be part of my obsesive compulsive disorder. :-) |

Heaven's Gate?by GeneralEComment by LindaLee: I would have loved to have seen the window in full light. I like that you included the branch at the top corner, and I do like your border. The fence in front really is distracting for me - I think I would have tried to crop right below the window. |
