you used flash, and there is a very dark shadow of the dog's ear
it seems that the dog has 3 ears... :p
the dog is at rest but his ears are "activated".. they are not lowered down..
you have to be patient with animals (or people too :) to get a better photo, i'm sure if you had waited for a minute or so you could get a perfect "dog at rest" picture

Comment by dr rick:
There is enough detail on the smooth object to see that it is perfectly focused, in contrast to the rough material. This parallels the contrast between rough and smooth that is the subject of the photo, adding depth to the meaning of the image. Well done.

Can't really tell what the subject is. Crisp focus would have suited better.

Interesting contrasts. Hard to pick out what things are or see detail in them.

Comment by Imagineer:
I see what you're trying to achieve here but you needed some rough stuff in focus. I would also have tried to fill the frame with that material too as the surrounding background is not helpful. Lighting from one side (rather than above, middle) would also prevent the glaring central highlight and create more atmosphere.

This is an attractive still life. It needs more DOF to put everything in focus.
