As much as I would love to shed light on why this didn't do better, I don't know if I'll be much help because I really love this. I'll try to be a little nit-picky and see if I can help you out a bit.
LIGHTING: Brilliant, actually. Your lighting has no flaws at all...there is a tiny bit of "over-shine" that appears to be from a flash on the middle right. Again, that is just being nitpicky.
SUBJECT: Fascinating. I have never seen one of these before, so it definitely caught my eye and made me stare for a long time.
TECHNICAL: You obviously took a great deal of time making your technical settings perfect. There are no flaws there that I can see.
CHALLENGE: Definitely yellow enough, but the transformation to green may have thrown some people.
OVERALL: Okay, here is my honest opinion. If you look at the winners of yellow, they all caught very "yellow" moments. Most people equate yellow with warmth, serenity, and happiness. As interesting as this flower is, it's a bit harsh and earthy. As awesome as the shot is, it just doesn't "feel" yellow (warmth, etc). If you'll notice, there was a shot called "A yellow way to escape". Everything in that shot was perfect, but a noose doesn't necessarily give you a warm feeling. I think it was the same here. As gorgeous and well-thought out as this print is, I think it would do MUCH better in another category...especially one that evokes curiosity or interest. I don't think your score had anything to do with the photo, but more from the overall feeling of yellow....totally my opinion!!!
