Fire on the Mountain

As they sat and watched the sky turn to fiery reds at the end of another day, the wrapped an arm around each other and she lay her head onto his shoulder and smiled. It was a glorious sunset. More vibrant and colorful and full of energy than any they could ever remember.

Yet as the sun disappeared over the horizon, the colors did not fade as they are wont to do on any regular day, but increased in vividness and clarity, and a sudden wind came from the direction of the settled sun, a wind that carried with it a deeply unsettling warmth and heat. As that dry and scorching wind tossed their hair and they grimaced in it, a sudden wash of fire and flame burst over the hills and mountain tops in a chaotic and violent storm.

They only had time to stare in shocked horror before they were consumed, along with all that was around them.

Aslan himself would never have thought it possible, existing for most of his time as the champion and savior of Narnia. But even a savior eventually finds himself desiring companionship, and whence that companionship comes can often be from the most unlikely place imaginable.

So it was that Aslan found himself in a love unlooked for and unexpected. A love that transcended the world, the universe, and everything in it. A love that ended up lasting eternity, and all of Narnia was better for it.

In the vastness that is time, on an expanse of sea, two creaking old hulks appeared on the still waters. In ages past, they had been full of life and activity, but those days were gone. Now, they simply floated there, a skeletal memory of the past that would never again be.

In the background, roaring past, was the evidence of the now, and the people on board that vessel gasped as they gazed towards the bare and decrepit hulls. They gasped in fear and awe, for as they looked, the boats seemed to waver on the breeze, and become ghostly and ethereal. Then, like a puff of mist, they were gone, the memory of their past gone with them.

The sea returned to the time that is now, and once again forgot the time before, perhaps to return to it in the time to come.

He gazed across the table at her, as she sat there sipping her wine. He didn't know how it had come this far, but it had, and he was more than a little scared. He'd always been the player, the womanizer, the playful gigolo, but something had happened this time. Something different. Something scary but wonderful.

He gazed across the table at her and wondered how he could possibly have fallen so deeply in love this time. No more were thoughts of the one-night stand in his mind. No more was the looking forward to the next one. Not this time. This time he looked at her and he saw her there in the morning, every morning. He looked at her and he saw her by his side when he was old. He looked at her at knew, for the first time in his life, that this was the one.

He gazed across the table at her and saw her smiling at him, and he shyly smiled back, and reached out for her hand, at the beginning of something wonderful.

It was her place away from life. Where she could come and let out all her frustrations, think about all her worries, reflect on all her decisions.

It was a place away from her stresses, where she could scream or laugh or cry or dance among the grasses. Where she could just stare into the clouds and create alternate universes in which to escape among the imaginary figures they shaped.

It was her place, and none could take it from her.

So they gathered, the men that had fought for their country so many times. The men that gave of themselves, that sacrificed so much. They gathered, and they paid tribute, and then their heart-rending rendition of "Over the Rainbow" went off without a hitch, and hearts the world over were warmed.

They had spent hours so far, doing their best. Up and down the mountain, drawing the lines, spelling out their message.

Only time would tell if they had been successful, and as they put the final touches on the secret language that only they could know, they glanced to the sky and waited.

With a flash, the ship that hung there responded, and it was good.

They had saved their world from a disaster that none but themselves, would ever know.

Searching for Wood Faeries

In the taverns they whispered their tales. By their fireplaces were the stories told. In hushed whispers, or nervous twitterings, were the sightings passed on from person to person among the villagers. The sightings of the little one that flitted in the wood, that walked amongst the trees, in colors like the rainbow. As she went, a light and haunting laughter followed, and her umbrella twirled in a hypnotic swirl. All that saw her were entranced, but she heeded no call. She only walked amongst the trees, always just out of reach, and even in the darkness would she shine, like a ray of sun in the deepest pits.

She was known as the Child of Prism, and was whispered about, and they wondered if she was ghost or spirit or something else entire, but she was uncatchable, and went down into history as a tale and a memory.

And ever her rainbow umbrella twirled and caught the light and brought wonder and amazement to all that happened across her.

Ol' Frederick stood in the field that he had once tended with such care, in his younger days. He stood there, and surveyed his surroundings, with a tear in his carburetor and a bend in his axle, and knew that his days were done. They'd foreclosed on his farm. He had done everything he could to save it, but it was just a sign of the times. For 40 years he had worked this place. For 40 years he had provided for his family, the village, and had had enough to sell at the fair every year. Those times, however, were gone. Now it was all technology and corporations and time moving on.

He stood there and sighed, and a bit of smoke escaped his pipe, and he turned to go. To go and stay in the yard where all the old and disused tractors go. To live out the end of his life amongst his own, his dignity forgotten, his respect lost.

Such is the way that time moves on, sometimes.

Spring will come...

He lay there, having long since expended his energy calling for help. Lay there with a broken handle, and unable to turn himself over again. Lay there in the bitter winds and harsh landscape of the open plains, alone.

He knew that this was probably the end. It was getting cold. So cold. He moved in and out of feverish dreams and hallucinations. Gardening tools of his past came and went from his thoughts. His father, the riding mower. His mother, the Garden Weasel. Little Jenny, the fan rake, who he swore he would marry one day.

A tear slipped down his tire, and dropped into the dead and frozen grass, as life slipped from him slowly, and he began to succumb to the elements.

It was then, on the verge of his consciousness, that he heard the shout, and his mind told him that it was only another vision. It wasn't real. There was no-one out here. He would die alone.

The shouts grew louder, and stronger, and then they were there. A couple of hiking Dollies. They rushed over to him, and his miracle came true.
