Only knowing the book from its synopsis, this seems an appropriate enough reference to the story. It's also photographed well with appealing tones, tint and texture. The composition is very static and carefully arranged, but to my eye, the balance is a little off - too heavy on the left which could be easily fixed by a slight crop from the right. Unless, however, you are trying for some instability in which case a different composition would work better.. So the overall effect is not satisfying. To break it down, it's a 6 for content, 6 for technique but only a 5 for visual impact. So, it squeaks by with a 6.

Lacking any period schooners to shoot, a modern sloop of two or three may be a reasonable substitute with some weather thrown in to provide seafaring atmosphere. But the overall effect lacks any sense of the spirit of the book's narrative of a rich kid's rescue by a fishing boat and his coming of age tribulations as reluctant member of the rescuer's crew. Visually, the shot lacks drama as the boaters here seem to be passively waiting for the weather to change or giving up for the day. A tighter crop might provide more detail and sense of involvement in whatever activity there is. Regrettably, only the weather itself has any interest because of the natural tones and color in the photo. The image might have been better as a spare, gray seascape devoid of boats to represent the sense of isolation of the kid in the story. 5

"Airport" by Arthur Hailey (1968)

Comment:
This image looks like a mistake as an illustration for the book/movie which takes place during a huge snowstorm. Maybe better for "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever...". So it is quite a stretch to see this as inspired by the novel. As an image, yes it is quite sharp and well exposed but lacks any content to stimulate visual or intellectual interest. If you are a pilot, then enjoy your flying and keep shooting. For this one my vote is a 5.

Well, this is a literal representation of the title, but as you know it has nothing to do with the story. Technically, the composition is good but the light is a problem and difficult, admittedly, to fix. My suggestion in cases like this is to convert to black & white and work with the shadows to bring up more detail, say, in his face. I'm giving a 5.

The shot is topical but the reflection across the upper section disrupts the visual impression. 5

"A River Runs Through It" by Norman Maclean

Comment:
The image works well - good color and processing for an illustrative picture. But in all my years of art school and since, I've never seen, nor can I understand the purpose of this particular border, which becomes a serious distraction for me. without it, the shot is a 7. With the border, it is a 6.

Good shot but the point of view is not quite right since they characters approach the lighthouse from the sea. But at least there is an appropriate background from which they could be coming... The image works well as a layered land/seascape although the color seems more imaginary than real - which might be your intention. 6

You want a classic novel? I don't need no classic novel. I like the in your face image but there's no association with the modern novel as far as I can tell. Image could be a 6 in another challenge. Here its only a 5.
