Fahrenheit 451by hopefulcrafty1Comment: I hope no important books were damaged in this image. It's well executed (especially the flames) and exemplary as possible cover art for the book. But in its reduced, closely cropped form, it seems a bit sterile. 6 |

The Old Curiosity Shop-Charles Dickensby MonaComment: Cute quip on the topic. But except for a smile, the image has not much more to offer. Purely on technical grounds, it is a competent quick, unprocessed take. 3 |

Esperanza Corderoby odriewComment: Don't know the book but based on its synopsis this image seems a suitable representation of the young protagonist. The image is interestingly composed with the inner framing by the plant, but the crop at the bottom abruptly slices off her hands - an unpleasant effect. The foggy effect is a bit overdone at least for me because it robs the shot of any clear focus and leaves viewers like me constantly trying to focus our eyes. A sharper focus on the face or at least her eyes could save it. All in all, a creative attempt but overdone. 5 |

A Bend in the Riverby moondogComment: Like so many images in this challenge, the topicality is lacking except in the most literal sense of the title. Using the title doesn't say much about drawing inspiration from the novel itself. The image itself is well detailed if a little bleached out in processing. Some find this attractive but not I. There are some potentially appealing birds but they're too small to count for much. 5 |

The Sun Also Risesby MarfunComment: I think the challenge is to draw inspiration from the novel, not simply the title of the novel. This has no connection to the novel itself. But it is indeed a pretty, even unusually beautiful image of the sun and misty land/waterscape. It could be a 6 or better if on topic. But as is in this challenge, 5. |

The Call of the Wildby skewsmeComment: But it was about wolves as I remember. Still, a shot that could be considered inspired by the book and an impossibly literal interpretation of the title. 7 for the rarity. |

Fanny Hillby disassociationComment: Yes quite a "classic" as I remember. This certainly suggests the raw sexuality of the book, but I think the thong is an anachronism. Better wearing nothing at all if a period piece of undress isn't available. Also I think the book was an indoor setting, so the leafy shadows don't fit either. But enough nitpicking. The challenge was to draw inspiration, and that you've done. Clearly, in a most elemental way. 5 for a lovely breast. |

1984 - George Orwellby FourPointXComment: It's one thing to show racks of what might be security/surveillance equipment and quite another to relate it to the story. The connection is missing here as far as I can see. There is nothing threatening as in the novel, just banks of equipment whose purpose is not clear in the image. Visually, is lacks a point of reference which could be achieved by closer point of view on something significant such as a camera or someone being spied upon in the monitors. It's an interesting subject, however, to which most of us may never have access and could use a lot of visual explaining. Look at all those red switches, for example. What do they do? How could you visually hint at their use? As is, the image doesn't tell us anything. 4 |

Cold Comfort Farm - Stella Gibbons by StagoleeComment: This is pretty as a rural sunset but hasn't much in the way of references to the book, at least as I understand from a synopsis. Maybe some farm buildings or a fence or some equipment or better some farmers, especially a younger woman, we could sense something of the novel. 5 |
