Wow.. I imagine that you must find this humorous in some personal way, but I just can't see it. Sorry. If there's anything that can go wrong with a photo, this has most of it. Bad focus, bad composition, uinteresting content, bad color.. it's like a 70's polaroid gone dreadfully wrong.

Greetings from the Critique Club.

Initial Thoughts

Very nice.. I'm not a flower lover, but this is nice to look at. Interesting subject for B&W.

Composition / Content

I personally like the composition you have here. It's not very classical, but it works. A strong center of the bottom daisy starts the viewer well, and it's a nice progression into the top flower, with the petals leading. The silky feel of the petals make the content a good choice, as it works extremely well in grey scale.

Background

Your background is sort of your main subject as well. A nice change of pace having the "background" as main focus, and the few parts of a further background we see are nicely OOF, and match the image.

Camera Work - Technical

Very nice exposure, you can almost feel the texture of the flowers. The DOF is great as well, giving a strong focus to the bottom and allowing that to be the strength of the photo, while the soft focus of the top petals give an almost 3D feel.

Digital Processing

One of the better works I've seen using the channel mixer for B&W, although I think it's probably one of the better methods of doing so. You've got a wonderful range of tones, and the sharpening was done beautifully. Only negative thing I could touch on is that some may have pegged you because of a minor amount of noise, but I don't find it hurts the shot at all.

Fits the Challenge

Definitely fits the challenge.

My Opinion on the Photo

This is one of the better floral photos I've seen to date. The B&W was a great choice here, and really helps bring out the satiny feel of the petals. You may have been hit because of a general apathy towards floral shots in challenges these days, but I don't think very many people can fault you technically here. Good job.

Hello from the Critique Club.

Initial Thoughts

Interesting view of plant life, but a little fuzzy and flat. Sure don't like that shadow.

Composition / Content

Your composition is pretty nice here, although I think it may be cropped just a little too closely at the bottom. Nothing really screams "great" however, and your choice of subject, while it *is* an interesting viewpoint, isn't all that inspiring. Last, but not least, the shadow across the main leaf here really doesn't do anything for the photo, is pretty distracting, and kind of takes away from a "sunburst" look the leaf could have had without it. Try experimenting with angles and perspectives to try and eliminate aspects such as this.

Background

I think it's a little distracting that the lower layer of leaves isn't more out of focus. A shallower depth of field may have helped here.

Camera Work - Technical

Hard to know what to suggest when there's no information on what settings you used to take this, but closing down the aperature, and zooming in as much as possible could have helped get a shallower DOF. (I'm well aware how difficult it is to achieve this on a compact digi-cam though). Your exposure seems to be ok, but your focus is a little soft.

Digital Processing

This image is lacking a little bit of contrast I think, so some work with that could be beneficial. A little more work with USM or other sharpening methods would help the soft focus as well.

Fits the Challenge

It's grey-scale, so fits the challenge.

My Opinion on the Photo

Not a huge botany fan, but you've done a good enough job capturing the essence of the plant. A few minor details in processing and camera work could improve this shot a lot. Don't be afraid to take dozens of photographs from all kinds of views and angles. That's a real benefit of digital. Good luck in the future.

This is about as good as it gets. A delightful, heartfelt photograph, and the selective desat only adds to the nostalgic feel.

A shot to be proud of for all time.

A Really great photograph here.. one of my two 10s of the challenge. (the red ribbon got the other one). If there's any indication that average scores are plummeting here on DPC, it's that this is only a 6.955.. easily deserving of a mid 7 in *my* books.

Congrats.
