Well, that's wacky alright.

For me the image is extremely harsh and looks very much like a snapshot. There are some simple changes I'd have made to prevent this:

> Don't use head-on flash - it flattens the shot and creates harsh shadows that 'outline' the subject
> Use a tripod and experiment with directional light sources to make it look warmer and more appetising, like a food 'pack shot' in advertising (just look at a magazine to see examples)
> Include more of the hand or none at all
> Try a lower angle to make the focus and composition more interesting

Cheers

This is a good idea and the chocoalte has really got my tste buds in a headlock.

However, the lighting and composition have lessened it's impact and potential significantly. I would place this kind of shot in the same category as 'sexy chocolate' for purposes of technique, in which case i would have made the following adjustments:

> Shoot lower down and closer to the free segment
> Don't use head-on flash. It's harsh and flattens the subject.
> Try to use multiple, directional light sources - as if it is in sexy, low lighting. This would give form to the subject and suggest context
> Use a tripod (you may have anyway)
> Attempt to make the chocolate look 'perfect'. A professional shoot would definitely demand that the subject would appear as appetising as possible.
> Spread the two elements further apart to improve composition
> Experiment with the depth of field - getting in close on each part with narrow DOF to see what looks best.
> Consider a more appropriate surface - maybe reflective to enhance the composition, add interest and insinuate cleanliness

Hope this helps. : )

Quite simply - I did not question this shot in any way - I just accepted its technical and emotive excellence. What caused this ludicrous rating? Noise? It's grain. Unclarity? Mood. Title? He's a guitarist - just a bass guitar, that's all.

You have, sir, been mightily robbed!! :)
