Looking Upby RefractedComment: Beautiful shot - really proficient portrait. He really looks totally natural and aware of his purpose here! It's so tangible - I could just poke my finger onto that lovely little fuzzy bit between the nose and mouth. : )
Yes - I enjoy playing with cats' squidgy pink pads too. :D Message edited by author 2004-11-22 09:01:52. |

Write Faster!by alsatiaComment: Ah - Boggle! Love that game. : )
Nice composition, but image is very soft and poor lighting has left this struggling to retain definition without noise. You'll probably get tons of 'out-of-focus' comments. |

Image critique: Lovely composition and pose (she looks lovely too) but this does seem to be artificially blurred which looks a little obvious in places. Your saviour though is the compo and subject - both very strong.
Out-of-challenge appeal: nice pose and photo underneath blur. Like it.

Challenge link: strong. You've understood the brief.
Image critique: attractive composition and pleasant subject. It looks a little washed out in places, but it's a nice approach.
Out-of-challenge appeal: medium - I'd probably look at this once again.

Stroboscopic Flowersby JackoComment: Invitational Challenge Level: Experienced

Image critique: well it's impressionism - but dizzying! Whether the subject is appropriate? I don't hink so - it seems that anything would do just to use this technique, so therefore it's gratuitous without much purpose. Strong colour, crop is a bit tight at the bottom.
Out-of-challenge appeal: yeah - I quite like this.

Image critique: it exercises the correct approach for this challenge in my view, but, for want of a better word, it's a bit dull. Colour is just too washed out and the subject not exactly riveting. However, you have attempted impressionism through your photo and not a filter or 'artificial' means so you deserve credit for that.
Out-of-challenge appeal: it's OK but not much to return for.

Mauve Reflectionsby kosmikkreeperComment: Invitational Challenge Level: Experienced

Image critique: while this scene is now an impression of the subject, it can only really be said that it is such due solely to camera shake! For me it requires a degree more depth and compositional planning to deliver the feeling of impressionism than simply distorting the scene.
Colours are pleasant but the feeling of blur just overpowers the emotive nature of the photo.
Out-of-challenge appeal: not a great deal due to the technique whcih has been applied only for meeting this challenge.

Image critique: the silence is tangible. A visually cleansing, non-literal approach which delivers an ordinary scene made special.
Out-of-challenge appeal: total - will revisit for sure.

Winter strollby geewhyComment: Invitational Challenge Level: Experienced
Challenge link: total. Perfect assessment of the brief and exercises many facets of the challenge.
Image critique: excellent in all respects. Great choice of focus and composition is clearly sound. I do wonder what it would look like in mono too - even more illusive I should imagine. If anything this is one shot that may have benefited from a border, as the colours wash out a bit next to the DPC grey.
Out-of-challenge appeal: I'll definitely revisit this one and I'm sure many others will appreciate it. |

Cold november night by heidaComment: Invitational Challenge Level: Experienced
Challenge link: strong.
Image critique: painterly treatment appears to override the actual impressionistic quality in the photo, but this is a good use of technique for the subject. It's emotive and well composed - if a little too processed for my preference. Blue looks a little too pushed and comes forward in the shot too far, when really a more subdued hue would leave the key subject in the spotlght (so to speak).
Out-of-challenge appeal: it's interesting so I will revisit.
