trapped...by wetlandComment: Interesting shot, very effective. Just a couple of things bother me... the composition seems a little off to me... the house is too near the corner for my taste.
The light tones are very effective, but they're just a tad too blown out in the top left. These are fairly small things that bother me though. 8 |

Alone Againby patriciabrown2001Comment: I have a feeling this photo won't get the placing it deserves, but I hope I'm wrong. The highlights are blown out, the picture is noisy, the skin tone is unflattering, there's an orange colour cast, it's blurry... but I LOVE all these things! They look intentional to me, and it creates a very effective mood. Your model is great, very photogenic and just right for this shot. I think the red hair and freckles give a waif-like vulnerable feel to her. 8 |

Money desolationby zepequenoComment: Oh, I know that feeling at the moment!
Nicely taken shot, well composed, effective background. The choice of smart clothes + tie is great... to me it says that this person is stuck in the loop of a 9-5 existence because they think they never have enough money. It speaks to me of family, mortgage, travel, etc. Great picture! 8 |

Desolation by heidaComment: Superb sky, intereresting silhouettes on the horizon. I'd have prefered a more wide-angle perspective for desolation though. The touches of blue are ver effective. 8 |

Home Sweet Homeby giantsComment: Poignant shot, the girl's expression is very effective. Could perhaps do with some more sharpness. Shame the highlights are blown out. Great composition. 8 |

Can You Help Me Please?by GolferDDSComment: This shot makes me uncomfortable for two reasons:
1: Street beggars make me feel guilty if I walk past and don't give anything!
2: I feel like the photographer has exploited the woman's condition... or people who are in that condition. There's something about the shot that brings out a feeling of pity rather than a feeling of empathy. It's hard to put my finger on why... maybe it's the chemistry between the subject and the photographer. There is certainly a look of desperation on her face but (and maybe it's got something to do with the fact that we are being asked to empathise with the owner of the bag who is exiting to our left) there is in my mind a seperation between ourselves and that feeling. Interesting shot though, and I like the sharpness in her face contrasted with the motion blur of her cup. 8 |

Hopelessness.by JimBComment: Hopelessness but not desolation. This picture is full of life!
It's a pretty good picture but just doesn't meet the challenge I'm afraid! 4 |

Desolation on my headby SaroComment: I think this is one of those shots that only has an emotional impact for the person who took it. Technically not the best of shots, out of focus, unflattering colour cast, uninspired composition, bad lighting. Better luck next time! 2 |

Final Sunset by rcrawfordComment: An absolutely gorgeous photo, beautiful lighting (presumably the tree is lit by a very nice sunset), great range of colours in the sky with very effective saturation. Nice horizon. Unfortunately, it doesn't really communicate desolation to me, as all the colours are so rich (especially the gold light on the tree). However, score = 8 (10 for a suitable challenge). |

Abandonnedby orussellComment: Ver simple, effective composition. The sepia toning works well here. Rule of thirds has definitely been your friend here. Very nice, flat sky. 9 |
