A graphic design book I recently read had some useful things that I keep in mind for photography, too, among them, "If you're going to be the same, be *the same*. And if you're going to be different, be *really different*." Something that's on the 'almost' line between feels strange, whereas a strong push one way or the other would feel bolder, more finished. |

| 06/16/2003 02:02:06 PM | Her red coatby dasserComment: The shot is busy enough, and the focus still sharp past the main subject, that the eye isn\'t drawn anywhere in particular, wandering instead over the table behind the girl. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/16/2003 02:01:22 PM | Chubby Cheeksby connieComment: Not really off-center (or not nearly as much as some others in the competition), so I have to grade it a little lower than I would if the topic were, say, Hunger, Animals, Thrift, or Caught in the Act. In any of those this might well be a 9 or 10-point shot; focus is lovely, DOF just right for my tastes, colors varied enough not to bore, expression and pose very cute. However, as it is, 5. |

| 06/16/2003 01:53:25 PM | Scooter (Detail Study)by SharQComment: It's high-key enough that the highlights on the tree and the bike seem almost to be holes cut in the picture, revealing the white sky. A very odd effect. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
