Handheld. I had it in program mode and was really not paying attention to the finer details of my settings. If I had realized that was going to be my challenge entry, I might have opted for a tripod. 20/20 hindsight. Something to be aware of for future shots like that.

Unfortunately, the help file does not give a detailed description of exactly what clarify does, except that it works with brightness and contrast. I'll see if I can dig up more info, because I would really like to know precisely what it does (I like to know the nuts and bolts stuff) and you are not the first person to want to duplicate it in photoshop.
