i can't say that this photo really does much for me... i suppose that, in some artistic way, this photo has merit, but color is not the theme of the photo in any way. Lack of color would have been a better theme for this shot. = 2

Eloise, greetings and welcome to DPChallenge. I noticed that you are new and I have read your profile information. It's great to have photographers in the family. My dad was a professional photographer for years and he is an invaluable technical resource to me.

I think your skills will develop nicely as you continue to participate on dpchallenge. I notice that you leave a lot of comments, which, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to improve your own photography. Giving critique seems to stick with me better than anything. My 'critiques' roll around in my head when I'm out shooting... It helps keep composition and subjectivity in my thoughts.

A couple of quick tips for you that could help you get started...

1 - subject choice is everything. the amount of interest level your subject has will be directly reflected in your scores on this site.

2 - literal straight-on views of most interesting subjects don't usually perform as well as some non-literal view would. once you choose your subject, look for an interesting perspective and interesting lighting.

3 - have a good time :) Don't get discouraged... keep plugging :)

Greetings from the Critique Club :)

Hi Smellyfish...

This is a beautiful scene... the composition is also excellent...

The text on this postcard seems to 'blend' just a little too much with the colors in the image. My personal preference in a situation like this would be to make that text stand out just a bit more if possible...

As for the photo, I think it's pretty good, but it just feels a tiny bit flat in the color/tonal ranges. I'm not sure if a level adjustment or a minor saturation bump would help this, but it would be worth a try. I would also make an attempt to sharpen the image just a tad also.

Excellent shot...

Hi Kosmik...

This is a great shot... It was one of my favorites of the challenge... I think it makes an excellent postcard by highlighting a nice architectural element of the community.

The composition of this photo accents the curves nicely and leads my eye right through the scene in a smooth way. The direction of light in this image also creates strong contrasts in the architecture that continue to accent those curves... You should take this image an try to sell it as a postcard photo to this museum...

Great work :)

Hi Uabreasch...

Cograts on an excellent finish :) This is a beautiful landscape scene... well composed and well exposed all the way around. It looks like you chose a perfect time of day for this shot and the weather conditions certainly were working in your benefit as well.

The reeds at the bottom of the frame are a bit of an issue for me, and I'm glad you decided to put the text over those. These reeds aren't really a distraction, but I think that there should actually be MORE of it in the image. The offer a nice element to the foreground of the image, but their presence, as shown, are just a bit weak. It may have been possible to compose this shot slightly differently by lowering the camera about 12-18 inches to bring more of the reeds into view.... It's just something to think about...

Excellent shot and keep up the great work :)
