Frecklesby HipychikComment: Love this shot. Not only is she adorable, but those eyes are compelling! Her expression is interesting - not quite clear what it is - makes you wonder what's going on in her head. The blush in her cheeks match the pink of her collar. I could easily see this in a 4' square on a museum wall. |

In Dad's Hatby scruffComment: Absolutely love the expression - to me almost an amused tolerance with a mischievous glint. There is also a feeling of quiet admiration - she is pleased with the person she's looking at. This shot draws me in. Excellent job of exposure, getting the detail in the shadow under the hat without blowing out the cheeks. |

Crossing The Ruinby renefunkComment: No expert, but I think a couple of things may have caused the sub-5 votes. First, the washout in the upper right 1/4 of the shot. Second, the shot lacks the ultra-crispness of focus on subject. Third, the feeling of distance from the subject - I feel like I'm looking at the scene, and not drawn into it. I didn't vote on your shot, but for me, it is very nice. I love the balance between the washout and wall - almost symmetrical. Very nice leading lines that wind up focusing your attention on her face. |

Murder on the Orient Express by gunsmith6Comment: Great shot! I love trains, and this is particularly nice. For me, the crop is too close to the front & top, but it looks like you were working against some distractions there. Even with the tight crop, it still evokes the image of the speeding train, intrigue & mystery. |

Cruisin'by BeeCeeComment: Love the car. Love the boat. Nice touch to have the guy sitting on the wall. I find bisecting OOSTERDAM with the roof of the car, and the car setting at an angle very distracting (at least the combination of the two - with the bisection being the most disturbing). Nice lighting. |

The Color Purpleby firefighter9961Comment: Glad to see you participating here. It tends to be a tough crowd, but that makes it all the better when you get good comments from people.
I like what you "saw" - the shape and position of the orchid is nice.
With non-DSLR cameras, you'll want to avoid higher ISO settings - these add (typically) too much grain (noise) to the picture. I try to shoot everything for DPChallenge at ISO 64 - as low ISO as I can get.
While people here tend to like out of focus foregrounds, your shot has too much out of focus foreground. They generally like the in-focus area to begin in the bottom 1/3 to mid-point in the picture, and then have the background out of focus as well. The non-DSLR cameras (at least my experience) have a tendency to focus on the background (wall in your case), and not on objects in the foreground.
Again, glad to see you participating here, and looking forward to seeing more of your work. |

Morning at the Tudor Boathouseby rob_smithComment: Those grasses to the left of the boathouse are huge! At first glance, this looks like a miniature. Gotta love that morning light! Beautiful reflections on the river.
The only thing that I think works against this shot is the empty space in the upper right. I wonder if you mirrored the image, so the blank space (lawn) was leading edge if that would "improve" it. |
