I checked several on-line dictionaries and all say a portrait is of a person. Which dictionary did you get this definition from? Good DOF, bokeh, composition and sharpness.

It looks like a house cat outdoors to me. It's a little overexposed on top. The branches are in the way of the face. It's stretching it to call it a portrait. Still, a nice looking cat.

Overlooking the fact for the moment that this DNMC, I'd recommend doing a landscape in landscape mode. Maybe you are considering it's a portrait because it's in portrait mode. Also, saturate the colors more to bring out the sky and forest.

It looks like a lucky grab. I don't know how much she likes this, but it is a cute expression. Definitely not your standard portrait. It's a little washed out on the left side and it would be nice to see her mouth in the DOF.

I think you made the right choice here. The only one of the outtakes that compares is the almost identical one where there is a hint of a smile. I would like to see her smile more as long as it fits the picture. I said "Claire?" before because it looked a lot like lovethelight. I even went so far as comparing freckles in her portfolio pictures but couldn't be sure.
