I love the overall tone and texture of this image, it is delicious! Even more, I love how each of the birds' wings are in a different configuration, culminating with the one in the upper corner spreading its wings wide as if it is about to escape from the image...extremely cool!

I love trying to see recognizable features in roots and trees, like clouds only different :-) This is nice! Reminds me of the face they gave John Hurt in the movie 'elephant man'; sad story, seems to fit your poem.
