Hand-held??? OMG! The details are just so sharp. This is great and I like that the orange tone of the spider works well with the blue tone of the paper/cardboard/whatever it is you used as a tabletop.

Day 1 - Penny for 'em

I don't think you got the DOF wrong. With such a short DOF (2.8) you cannot put the camera at an angle if you want to whole penny to be sharp. I think it was at an angle. Even with more DOF (higher f number), taken at an angle, you'd see differences in zones of sharpness. True, the zone of really sharp would be larger but not so much as to cover the whole penny.

I am really looking forward to your pictures this month and witnessing you master this new tool. I love macro shots, I've had my lens for 9 months now but I find I still discover possibilities to it almost weekly... Hang in there!

What a great idea to take a sample shot to gauge your progress - I wish I'd thought of that! I think this is pretty good, bokeh and all but the shape of the plant seems to scream for a vertical composition so that the "bud" (?) isn't cropped at the bottom.

This really pops and the water droplets are so sharp, they look like glass beads. I think it would looks even better without any BG, with just a close-up of the leaf and water.

I so have to take one of these this summer!! I just LOVE the texture of the seeds. The focus is spot on and the composition with the seeds on the left and a dark BG on the right just make for a well balanced shot.

talk - day 1 macro

I always like macro shots of everyday objects as they make me see them in a new light. I like the angle too. I think contrast could be boosted a bit to make the writing really black. I look forward to seeing what you will come up next.

Old Flower - Day 1

I like that you focused sharply on the flower center, thus leaving the puffiness around it nicely soft. I like the nice dark BG. In a perfect world, I do wish the bottom of the image was cleaned up (I read the other comments) but I totally agree with you for not disturbing nature. IMO, there better to be in your picture then taken away from where they should be. A good start!

Day 01 - Onion

I like the almost translucent quality of the white in this. The touch of green here and there makes this even more interesting. Good job on the lighting to pick up the sparkly little cells in the onion.
