a diffuser would have helped to avoid the hot blown out areas. Although you were watching the background to get a good bokeh, a more neutral less busy one would work much better to pop out the new tree. Your subject is too busy as well. I'm sure you had the chance to remove (bend away) the additional branches reaching into your picture.
