This is really nice in B&W. The lack of color cuts it down to the basic light, shade, and lines in a way that would be confused by color.

Congrats Jeb! You never know when you will get a very popular shot. Sometimes the best ones just happen with no stress at all about shooting them. You're just getting better at having those moments.

This has your trademark California girl lighting. Many of your images have that film photography "semi pastel" look that is difficult to get with digital.
I think that I would have framed to get the top of the tree. I noticed a while back that it helps the images that I shoot to do that. It somehow breaks the flow around the edge of the shot when the tree tops are out of the frame.

This has marvelous use of shading and shapes. Well found, and excellent technique to capture the scene in such delicate detail.

The camera's automatic metering system is trying to create a neutral grey (18% luminosity) average brightness overall for the whole scene in the image, which is about what this image shows. Neutral grey is a pretty dark grey.
To get well exposed shots in snow or on the beach, you have to set the camera EV (exposure value) setting to +1 or +2. There may also be a "scene" setting for beach or snow shooting that you can use. Check in your camera manual.
Don't be afraid to experiment with the camera's settings. You can always go back to full automatic.

Photos of colorful huts like this at a beach are always popular. This is the first that I have seen with a wall behind them. It's nice how the colorful huts stand out from the dull color of the wall.

This is a nice view of some fine old machinery. I like that you can see the gauge on the steam engine. The belt makes a fine leading line as well.
