Wigged Birdby LuguerComment: Something doesn't look quite right here, but not being familiar with the bird I may be wrong. I would hazard that you have used a heavy dose of noise reduction, coupled with fairly agressive sharpening - there is a very visible halo around the bird's beak and the top of it's head. |

Mesmerizedby RobSkogComment: The high key type effect doesn't work for me here, appearing more as a result of poor exposure control than as a deliberate intention. It is a technique I haven't mastered, but must explore - and please don't let my comments put you off experimenting - some work, some don't, and some work for some people and not for others.... |

Queen Victoria Drops in For Teaby Shy ClickerComment: I find this almost bizarre, and visually confusing. The partial desat gives the appearance of a hoarding, rather than a real scene(which may of course, have been part of your intent). It is an interesting idea, but for me doesn't work on an aesthetic level, coming across as somewhat gimicky. On a technical level, there appears to be a masking error at the third-fourth link in from the left, although looking again it may be part of one of the clouds. |

Greenyby rema15Comment: For me the processing has removed this image from the category of photography to digital art, and seems to be a case of manipulation for the sake of it. I would be interested to see the original photo, and to read your notes on what your aim was with the processing. |

"...a million miles from reality"by CidpilotComment: I gave this a 7, and thought it one of the stronger images in the challenge. I love the appearance of sponteneity; I realise from your notes that this is an illusion, but that is pretty much what all photography is! Your depth of field is absolutely spot on, as is the lighting. the tonal range of your mono conversion is good, although there aren't any whites to provide contrast. With regards to your young model - you've got a good one there, I'd keep him ;-). The chipped and slightly mucky finger nails are a nice touch, and add to the emotive, story-telling aspect. I am with kteach in thatthe change i light in the upper left is slightly distracting - it was the thing thta prevented me from bumping you to an 8.
A word of warning about the scores at DPC - don't take the end score as a measure of a photos value. To me the value of a photo is in the impact, particlarly lasting impact, that a photo has on a single viewer. This is one that I enjoyed viewing, and look forward to coming across again. It is a photo that I want to explore, not just with my eyes but with my brain too, if that makes any sense? |

into thin air by tateComment: Delighted to see my top pick take the Blue - don't think that has ever happened before!
Edit: just noticed your actual score 7.7 - that is huge! Message edited by author 2008-03-05 01:44:52. |
