This is what HDR images look like on monitors that can't display the full 32 bits. Naturally, the monitor clips the shadows and highlights, as they are way out of its 8-bit range.

This is the point of tonemapping- it allows 32 bit images to be viewed accurately (or as accurately as possible) on 8-bit devices.
