i really like the idea behind this, but i agree that the sky is a bit overprocessed. sometimes delicate clouds do not need such a heavy handed hdr treatment. perhaps some layer masks in photoshop would have helped separate the sky from the land, so you could process each element individually.

this is a great image, and capturing star trails can be very difficult. i initially got started in photography through astronomy; bought a film camera and tripod solely to capture star trails. when i realized that the amount of light pollution in my neighbourhood meant long exposures at night wouldn't be possible, i gave up on the cosmos and turned my lens towards daytime terrestrial subjects. you must have a very dark location here, as i see very little sky glow. the trails are great, but as a photograph im left wanting something to look at in the foreground. the very dark, featureless land is a bit distracting. maybe next time you could find some interesting foreground subject, like a tree or some rocks, and illuminate with your flash or a lamp.

The horizon seems to give this image a slightly tilted view but I gather that is due to the hills on the right side more than lack of being horizontal. I realize it is almost impossible to do at night, but it would have been great to have that set of circles a bit more centered, either by cropping or by composing a bit more to the left.

One question for you...We have the "Northern Star" to guide us up North. What star or constellation do you follow to show you South?

there is not really any southern pole star. you can use the southern cross as a pointer.

great colours. i bet the images look superb full sized.

curious, what kind of background did you use? is it a dedicated photographic background or did you improvise some other material?
