Ocean City Pierby dhphotographyComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
And welcome to DPC. I can see this is only your second entry here, so well done on achieving an almost 6 score in your second challenge.
I totally agree with you about the Tokina, it's a great lens. It's one of my favourites even if I don't use it nearly as often as I should.
Turning to your image. There's a lot to like about this one and I think you've done a great job with the long exposure. You captured the motion of the water swirling around the pier very nicely. The composition is excellent.
To me it looks like you have applied some type of tonemapping to the image and I can't quite decide if I like it or not. You've done a great job with the sea and sky, two things I find people tend to overdo. But there is something about the pier which troubles me. Not sure what I would do differently.
Anyway, overall I would say this is a well done image and clearly others thought so too, as you got a pretty decent score.
Look forward to your next entry.
Sarah

Mekongby ubiqueComment: Very happy to see my top pic and my 10 vote were in line with the jury! Well done Paul, it's a great image. I think I may have said that once or twice already ;) |

Alfred's Dreamby Ja-9Comment: Greetings from the Critique Club
Seems only right that I should get to comment on one of your images Janine
This is a bit of a challenge for me to give any constructive critique, for I was one of your 9s. Clearly you are doing something right! Have to confess, I could easily have mistaken this for one of Alicia's. (That's a compliment by the way!)
I was quite surprised this didn't score better. I don't know what you could have done differently to get a higher score.
Well done on a lovely image. |

The dark side of the moonby Rino63Comment: Greetings from the Critique Club
Well, I can see where you are going with this idea, but somehow it just doesn't work for me. I'm afraid I was one of your lower scoring voters. Conceptually I have no problems with this when thinking of the challenge topic.
I like the composition, but I maybe a bit like bvy below. I think for this to work it needs to be either much more blurry, or then much sharper. I also wonder how it would be in B&W? I think converting it to B&W would get over the whole toenail thing (have to say, I'm in the same camp as Lydia on this one - a good pedicure would have helped a lot pre-shoot).
I would say, nice try, but somehow this is missing something.

Welcome!by lobrinComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
Where to start. Well, I have to confess I only gave you a 5 for this image. Whilst I think it is a very fine travel photograph, it does not meet my personal definition of contemporary fine art photography. As far as travel photography goes though, this is wonderful. An excellent moment captured. I do however find the contrast and saturation to be a bit pumped up which spoils it a bit.
Overall a nicely done travel photo, but not really contemporary fine art. I think you knew that already since you did in fact comment as such in your photographer's notes.

Bride Bouquetby StickInMindComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
I was trying to write this critique without reading any of the other comments, but that was quite hard to do. Having read one of the comments, I'm not sure I can really add anything extra that would be useful as I think he has hit the nail on the head. The composition is awkward, there is nothing really to draw the eye in. I think the idea in general was a good one, but it misses somewhere along the way.
But for me, I think the biggest problem lies with the B&W conversion. I think it could do with a boost in exposure and brightness to make it "pop". I know it's quite noisy too, but a light application of some noise reduction software would help this.
Overall, I think it's not a bad image, and probably scored round about where I would have expected it to. Had I voted in this challenge I'm sure I would have given it a 5. Although, if the B&W was a bit more interesting, this may have gone up to a 6.
