You must keep for multiple reasons: it is energetic and dynamic; it leaves the viewer looking as nothing is obvious in this image; it shows the connection between the photographer and the subject (after all, how close can a stranger photog get to a child); and last but not least, this diagonal look obscured by her hair is dynamite.

They say better late than never, so here I go:
Great idea and execution to match. I think your description is worth an "How did they do it" tutorial. Regarding the cluttered background, maybe if you could add a 6th picture of that bg, it wouldn't be perceived as distracting but as part of the image.
