Rough-Hewn Working Hands

I guess you could say the hands themselves are distracting.

I saw this during voting, but wasn't sure if I should comment on the actual hands. I Googled around a bit, because to me unless those were cold or overworked hands, this person may want to see a doctor. Hopefully this isn't a common occurrence. I saw some cases where it's just poor circulation, but there were also some mention of liver disease and whatnot.

Again, I hope these hands were just cold after some good hard work.

I really hope this scores well. It's definitely outside of the box and done well. I normally don't like the black and white processing that leans towards the gray side (non-contrasty), but this I don't mind at all.

I will be honest that I don't understand the connection between the title and the image. I can guess, but it's not clear.

This could use a slightly greater DOF to include more of the beak, but this is still a very beautiful image. I love the colors and the detail in the eye.

Lighting and processing are beautiful like usual, but I almost want to see another element to the photo; an action, an object... something. Kinda sucks when people know what you're capable of, heh. We want more!

Sure.. blind warrior, heh. They look so tough with their hoods on, but are so docile and... blind!

Beautiful gradient sky and backlight off the shiny leather. There's some weirdness going on with the back tightening straps. I'd be curious what in your processing caused that. There's some slight banding in your sky, so maybe you pushed your color too far?

Someone needs to moisturize! It's funny when you see creatures up close, because you see things you wouldn't expect. Like eyelashes!

Your focus and DOF look pretty good. I think I would have liked to see him with his head turned just a little. Those long narrow bird heads can get lost so easily in the background.

The Portal

This is a cool idea. It's one of those situations where you realize just how dirty everything is too though, heh. There's several dust spots on both the mirror and the glass it's standing on.

The image seems like it should have a softness to it, but the black is pretty abrupt. I'm not sure if the black background would have looked better as something much lighter or maybe pull a color from the sunset (like the light blue).
