Oak in Fieldby DrakeComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
I like this shot and am glad to see I gave it a 6 in voting. Not so much due to the subject matter, more due to the centrally composed image. Nice exposure and light. Still, great to read the story of this tree, and I have to disagree a little with a comment on blowing out highlights and eliminated shadow detail...I am a stickler for bleachy highlights and none show up here. And HDR is supposed to bring out detail in shadowed areas, so I have no squabble with you doing that! The fact that the tree is backlit adds a surreal atmosphere to the whole shot, and I do appreciate that.

Smoke Break For The Working Manby WonderDudeComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
I quite liked this image and gave it a 7 in voting so thought it would finish higher than it did. I think you beat me :-) Stuart and his pose here reminds me of Nathaniel Rateliffe, of whom I am a fan. You have a lot of grey tones in there, but I don't see true black, though pretty sure there is pure white in there. The lighting and comp are great. I can't see the extensive pp work, so kudos for making it invisible!!
Honestly I don't know why portraits seem to have been soundly panned in this challenge. Seems like the voters were expecting nothing less than towering peaks and cool urban shots, and anything more earthy and/or human just wasn't in the cards.
Hope this helps!

Cold Darknessby DawnPatrolComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
First things first. Anytime someone leaves you a comment or critique, it is considered quite rude to not click the box marked 'Photographer found comment helpful'. Unless the comment itself is outright rude, of course. Just saying.
Now. Onto the image. I gave you a 6 in voting because I felt that you have lots of good grey tones going on, along with true black and white, which some voters are vert picky about. I like the lighting and comp as I am also a very technical photographer. However, I am however struggling a little to see the HDR effect here, and saw for myself that portraits are a bit tougher to do in HDR!
Overall a very good shot, you obviously have the raw talent and skills to do well here, so I do hope you continue to enter challenges here.
Feel free to PM me with any questions,
Susan |
