| 05/03/2009 08:02:40 PM | Down a Dark Alleyby JimiRoseComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Initial impression: Still makes my blood run cold, because this is such a reality. I gave you an 8 and would still give you an 8, possibly a 9, for the sharpness of this shot.
Technical: Great concept, very well executed. Great dof, the lighting is wonderful, just enough light on the blade without losing it to glare. The composition is very good, simple and effective. Great use of negative space.
Artistic: I can almost hear you saying,'Give me your money or else.' The shadows on your face are great, the tilt of the cowl/hood and knife almost converge, and the cold look to your equally hooded eyes all work beautifully together.
FWIW: Wouldn't change a thing. Keep up the good work!

| 05/03/2009 05:53:44 PM | I can't talk!by AmeedEl-GhoulComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Initial impression: I gave this a 9 in voting and stick by that vote. Very simple and very terrifying, very much a nightmare and I do think it should have finished in the top 10.
Technical: Like that there is so much darkness around, leaves lots to the imagination; unfortunately that also means you got dinged in the voting. Composition very good, like the way the blue-white of her blouse is balanced with the red light. The pp seems perfect for this shot.
Artistic: Love the attention to detail, the makeup, the hair, the pose, the threads, the eyes rolling back in the head, everything. And the idea of being unable to talk is very strongly conveyed, even without a title you could've guessed what this nightmare was about.
A really strong entry, sadly the dramatic use of lighting didn't resonate with most dpcers. However, you can either shoot to please the dpc crowd, or you can (and imho) should, shoot to please yourself. Very good work, you've been improving steadily, keep up the great work!

| 05/01/2009 09:44:24 PM | Spikes - Lots of Spikesby FrankRobinsonComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Initial impression: Yikes, if that is only the base of a lilypad, I dread to see what the top looks like. Quite incredible with all the little spiky things inside the cells.
Technical: Pov and pp good; dof a little soft in lower right area. Composition risks being a little busy, there is no obvious focal point. The darkness in the top part seems to weigh the shot down a little.
Artistic: Fairly good shot, contrast and colours need a little punching up.
FWIW: If this were my shot I would have cropped out the entire top half of the shot and zoomed in on the diagonal line going almost perfectly from bottom-left to top-right corner. I may have also done, after contrast and saturation, a pass with a red filter to bring out the red blossom(?) in lower right, then perhaps done usm 1x and sharpen edges 1x, just to enhance the spikiness.
Good concept and execution, just needs a little work. Good work!

| 05/01/2009 09:31:17 PM | My Worst Nightmareby JoaniePComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Initial impression: I like this shot with the reversed-out tones and surreal feel to it. Didn't understand straight away (as you can tell by my in-voting comment) that it reflected a bridge phobia specifically.
Technical: Like the bridge trusses on the left, clean lines, dof good, pov ok cause you were probably in a car at the time. A more extreme pov may have got you higher scores. I don't mind the level of post-processing here, I think it enhances the nightmarish quality.
Artistic: Good feel to this shot, made me wonder why your world view was inverted. Both idea and execution work well.
FWIW: I would try to convey a stronger sense as to why crossing bridges is a nightmare for you; if you can't do it with the camera, give it a title that gives a stronger idea of what your phobia is. Play around with your post-processing program, check out the built-in tutorials most have, and just have fun tweaking the image. All in all, good work!

| 05/01/2009 07:32:15 AM | A Horse with No Name...by NikonJebComment: I don't have time to verify this beastie's identity right now, but at a guess I'd say it's a Lippman, that style is quite primitive and yes, indigenous to the States. Nice job of selective desat btw!
Actually according to my sources, it's probably an Armitage Herschell (1885), or a copy of one :-) Message edited by author 2009-05-03 18:00:02. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
