Little Boat

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impression: Often seen this view from a plane, too, so yes everything is very teeny from way up there. Having said that, this would be a shoehorn, as the scale presents the boat as miniature...but it isn't a true miniature. You often have to interpret the challenge very literally to do well.

Technical: POV and comp interesting, but shot quite grainy. Feel that the b/w doesn't do this shot justice, even muted colours may have helped it pop a little more.

Artistic: I like the clouds casting shadows on the mountains towards the middle/right of shot, gives it depth and texture.

Overall: Not a bad effort, you have the right approach. Keep shooting!

Feel free to PM me with any questions,

Susan

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impression: OMG I have to critique one of Don's pix, I not only have to make it sound like I know what I'm talking about, it also won the brown...! But this shot does grow on you.

Technical: Comp OK, lighting is ambient, maybe ap open a little more to 1/100 or so and f-stop one or two higher. Just a teeny-tiny itty-bitty bit oof.

Artistic: Very impressionistic, the dead leaves and blurry b/g give it a sense of surreality. Does that make sense? Actually the glowy blur does make the bug's wings look somewhat ethereal. Quite nice.

Overall: Ummm....err....*scratching head* I actually cannot think of a way to improve upon this shot. Well done! :-)

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impression: I get tipsy just looking at it :-) would have got a 7 from me in voting because I like the atmosphere here, very cozy and warm.

Technical: Lighting looks ambient and 6 seconds...wow, you really wanted to get the most out of it, esp as you shot at f4. Seems to have been worth it. Tiny little higlights work well too, could well have been glare-y. Comp very simple, but some may not have cared for the chair and fern in the b/g.

Artistic: Hmm...curved table top or truly tilted? Either way i think the slight list is fun and adds to the shot. Like the slight blur/double lettering in the reflection of the JD bottle for same reason.

FWIW: The chair in the b/g may have put some voters off, if they thought it was making the comp cluttered. I do find my eye wandering up the curve of the large bottle to the fern, thence to the easy chair. Just for fun, re-do this pic and black out the chair and fern, see how it changes your shot. Note that I didn't say doing so would necessarily improve your shot; that is your call to make.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impression: looks very much like the kind of shot I would do...or attempt anyway :-)

Technical: Composition quite good, the eye goes straight to the vase and tiny flowers which are all nicely in focus. I like that the rose itself is oof, adds some depth, and macros can often look too flat. Needs a little more light coming in from behind the rose to knock out that unlit area and help kill shadows underneath, maybe help backlight it a bit to give it a glow. Almost some glare on the white petals of the toy flowers, but looks like you erred on the side of caution. Another f-stop up and you probably would have had glare.

Artistic: very simple and sweet shot, certainly meets the challenge description and you finished with a respectable score.

Overall a very decent entry, good work and look forward to seeing more!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impression: Ooh, wish I'd shot this...

Technical: Great use of thirds, dof great, lovely lighting, but if this is simply a long shot of Mount Hood (I thought it was Mount Baker at first) then sadly it is DNMC. But...

Artistic: It is still a very good photo and pleasing to the eye. Can't figure out what the crop (as in veggies) is in the foreground; hopefully something legal! :-)

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impression: made me lol, so an automatic 8, had I voted.

Technical: Comp is pleasing, DOF is very shallow, there's a little glare to the left, the lampshade vanishes against the bg. Some oof clutter in bg...but...

Artistic: Lots of fun and work went into this shot, don't think it wasn't noticed and appreciated! Love the phone off the hook and the painting in the bg. Obviously the voters liked it, finished in the top 20. Well done!

FWIW: I would've tried to get the chair in focus, to emphasize the scale, and left the hand as is. All in all a fun shoot, definitely got across the whole concept of Miniature very well!

Feel free to PM me with any questions,

Susan
