There is nothing wrong with zoo photos. My constructive critique of this image is the loss of feather detail (and other fine detail throughout). For a captive bird this close, I'd expect to see some amazing detail. Might have been a problem with high dynamic range from shadows to highlights.

Just a bit underexposed for the HB. Female Ruby-throated.... or female broad-tailed. The flower is nicely in focus and properly exposed.

This almost works. The eye and beak need to be one notch sharper to balance he motion blur (or narrow DOF) represented by the wings.
