I don't mean to be insulting with this, but if you take away the title and cover up the word "marine" on his uniform what have you got left?
A snapshot of a smiling couple. Would it have rated this high then?
I think this one scored purely on emotionalism. Yes, how a picture touchs is important but in somewhere like this, is it the only thing?
As a new member I may be wrong, but that's just my opinion.

For the most part I really like this. The lilies stand out so sharply and the colour is lovely. I think the hard glass angle contrasts well with the organics. However, I feel the crop is a bit tight on top, and the bits of flower in lower left and right clutter. I'm not sure how I feel about the crystal on the stand.

Need some cold comfort?

I like it. The bottle has kind of a strongman, shoulders squared-against-the-world and chest-stuck-out feel to me. I can almost picture the superhero cape! The trace of light diffusing off the ice against the black just accentuates the cold as does the fact that the ice isn't crystal clear.

I simply love this. My eye is content to sit and soak it in without being tempted to flit from here to there trying to absorb or deciper details.
It took me a few minutes just to write that much because I was just sitting... looking... and giving deep sighs as I felt tension draining.
