the trick is in how to tell the story. you tell your stories by charging into them. you start wide and end close up. it's a thrill ride.

in this essay, the photos fade into each other. this photo already looks like it's fading into something else. So does the last photo. There is no stable image, no moment frozen. Your essay is as fragile and beautiful as the world in front of the camera.

Color fades to black and white. People fade to black and white. Family fades out and in... with yourself in the middle.

what makes this good? what makes a melody good? damned if I know.

one more thing, capturing in-between moments, moments without "moment", you show a respect and empathy missing from a typical National Geographic photo essay of a foreign locale. You are, in fact, undermining their foreign-ness to accentuate their human-ness.

p.s. I also thought the diptych seemed out of place, but it was beautiful so I forgave you.

This are excellent examples of "slice of life" photographs, to put it crudely. Instead of a Decisive Moment, it's more like in-between moments, when the girl on the left is making a funny face, moments of blur, moments of chase (but of course these are all decisive moments and Bresson knew that, but maybe not all of his disciples do). I look forward to more parts of this journal.

This is most certainly a photo essay. You've forced me to consider this as a genre of photography: the *un*candid street portrait. The contrast with mark wiley's essay could not be more apparent... it's the difference between unawareness and awareness. Mark gives us the peace of unconsciousness, you give us proud confrontation. There is a timeless quality to these photos. Any time in photographic history someone can be taken aside and photographed like this, but these are not "posed". Clearly, this is a respectful, honest interaction between two people, subject and photographer. You're on a fine line here, but you never lose your footing. They are aware enough to look you in the "eye" but not long enough to become self-conscious. The expressions are as varied as the people themselves, as though you've caught something essential about each person instead of having them act out your agenda.

Really, this collection stands up against any of the others here.

most of your portraits convey a sort of Nirvana of waiting... a strong blank expression common in painted portraits. quite beautiful portraits.

you are committing to the square crop!

and you are really, really pulling it off.

these remind me of that technique of covering paper with ink and then scraping it off to make the picture. this visual "theme" coheres powerfully. i absolutely love this essay and am now waiting impatiently for your next book.
