Deep Purple Labyrinth

Deep Purple Labyrinth

Comment:
Many people were surprised that a cover band would release their own album, but it turned out that DPL was hiding a musical genius. Hiding in plain sight, I might add... it was the dog they brought on stage during their shows! A lab, of course... Unfortunately, the world was not ready for his genius, and an album of howls and yelps did not go over well for people expecting to hear Deep Purple on the cheap. Sensing the disappointment of his masters, Labyrinth hit the road, sharing adventures with a fluffy cat and a mischievous bear cub, at least until his solo effort "Deep Purple Labrador" made platinum.

Danish Poultry League

Comment:
The first and some say the best Danish ska band, the Poultry League was thought to have sold out in this, their major label debut. By singing in English, they were considered merely a novelty act by Americans. The title song turned into a very popular dance at Frat parties. Dancers would take turns in the center of crazed flappers, and would have to kiss the fifth chicken they counted.

Disarmingly Plump Lovelies

Comment:
Pioneers in electric ukelele music, the DPL were in fact neither disarming, plump, nor lovely. In reality, they were bored construction workers who fell in love with the sound that the wind made through the girders of skyscrapers. They devoted their moonlighting career to recreating that sound. Only five harmonizing electric ukeleles could achieve it. Sadly, Tony fell to his death just days before their first album was released. He is represented by the smallest doll who looks downward towards her fate.

ah, Yorick! I knew him, Horatio. He was a man of infinite jest. I'll never forget the time he drank from my glass while I wasn't looking. Trouble was I was a painter and the glass was full of turpentine. Oh, but the painting I made of his death! Ecstatic! It was so beautiful I wept turpentine tears... and ruined it. So I had to use a photo of his skull for my album cover. Luckily he had excellent teeth.

I'm sorry but this album was ruined for me by the bartender of McGee's Tavern on 37th street. He insisted on playing it every night. I suppose I could have gone to another tavern, but there was this girl who sat at the bar every weekend, you know how it is. So every single Saturday night I would screw my courage to the sticking point and slide over to talk to her, and sure as clockwork "Tiny Bubbles" would start playing, and she would laugh like it was the first time she ever heard it. And then she would cry. And, without fail, I would ask her if there was anything I could do. And then she would throw her beer on me and ask for champagne. Every single Saturday night. It got so I stopped wearing my best shirts.

The band name doesn't sound like a real band name, but I love the photo and the album title! 7

Delicate Painted Ladies "Behind the Mask"

Comment:
The ironically-named Delicate Painted Ladies came late to the Punk Rock scene, but quickly made up for lost time. During every show they would paint each other with metallic colors, but not delicately! Mostly, they would just throw cups of paint at each other. They broke up in 1982 when their lead singer was arrested for attempting to dig up John Lennon.

DPofL was started by Yanni when he felt his solo work wasn't soulful enough. He hoped that by teaming with Michael Bolton and Kenny G he would find the deep meaning he sought. This power trio achieved its greatest depth on their second album, "the soul's journey." A concept album, it followed the soul of a dung beetle through fifty-seven reincarnations until finally it ended up as David Crosby where it achieved Nirvana at the business end of a Joni-Mitchell-shaped bong. This co-opting of 60s hippieness finally gave Yanni the serenity he needed to accept his profound superficiality, at which point he dissolved into a giant smile.

DPL were not content to make protest music. They organized rallies against the second Gulf War, and thought of themselves as the Greenpeace of peace. Their beautiful lead singer, who was featured on their first album, "Stand," chained herself to a mosque in Kabul. She is now believed to be in Guantanamo.
