The Weight of Distance

kind of annoyed by the mirror but that is very "posthumous" so I can't really blame you. kind of aggressively "bad" photo in several ways, which is also very "posthumous." Biggest transgression to me is that big swath of road. so much nothing. The title is pretending to be about the distance between the two people, but really it's about that big old desert of a road between you and them, between me and them. The mirror emphasizes that distance. There's a feeling to that, a weight you might say. As Wallace Stevens said, "The [pair] are not seen/as the observer wills."

Well, I'm glad you appreciate my taste for the meta. in a sense every photograph is of a photograph. in a sense every photograph is of the photographer. I was skeptical at first but I like how it gets progressively brighter until the actual "subject" is barely visible.

ah yes in the dance of winter a new song, whispered. this photo correctly exposes the season, or rather changes the season, as we all must do.

yes, meetings, there is much to discuss, there are agendas, one meeting interrupts another, through a glass wall or through a memory. no place is decided on. such decisions are tabled.

Headwinds

Headwinds2nd Place

Comment:
I like the title. A headwind makes it harder to progress. The motion of the photo is even more destructive, like an earthquake. It feels like the myth of patriotism is revealing itself to be nothing but a ghost. The flags are burning, have burned, are smoke now. The citizens are turning into the stripes, and the stars are scattered on the grass.

I could illustrate an essay on museums with this photo. Museums don't just provide homes for art, they shape the art that is created. Your photo suggests to me that this artist knew he was painting for a museum, and is in fact painting a museum. Notice all the similarities between the painted world and the photographed world. He or she has painted something bare and sterile, in which life and passion stand around awkwardly.

the perks of being a wallflower

Comment:
This is very stylized, a style that announces itself as art, which I don't usually like, but there is much that commends this image to me. Because it is affecting primitive camera technology, and "objectifying" a woman's face, it reminds me of Man Ray. The rose becomes most of the face, and there is a certain poignancy in its failure to become a face even though it's trying very hard. The only thing remaining of the face is one eye. Now, someone grumpier than I might say that it's pandering to include a beautiful glistening eye, but I like that the face is allowed to see, rather than be seen. There is something allegorically rich about it. The photo is a collage of cliches, but actually there is nothing wrong with that if they are clumped together in a confrontational or slightly disturbing way.
