Love the colours and I think the 'dead ducks' add another interest to the shot. I would like to have seen all of the front tire in the shot but other that that I like this :o)

Hi keith,

Well done on your 2nd highest scoring image so far :o) You've already had lots of positive feedback which is really great. I'd agree with your commenters, a little more of the face would really have helped this shot but other than that you have all the other elements right :o) Look forward to seeing your next entry :o)

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Composition:

I really like your composition here, the lines leading you to the blue glass at the top really helps this shot. The fountain works well against your choice of black background.

Technicals:

Firstly I would say this is more a close up than a macro and could be a reason why you didn't receive a better score. I like the light you have used and the capture of movement within the glass is nice.

My personal thought:

The challenge description said the subject should not easily be identificable at first glance. The thing I struggle with with this shot is had I not read your description I would still not know what I was looking at and I think maybe voters were looking to at least be able to make out the subject after one or two glances.

Hi Noella,

Composition:

I like the position of subject in the frame but the image is quite small so I am assuming you cropped to get closer? The bee seems to take more of my attention than the purple flower and this could be why the image did not score well. I would have cropped a little more off the right as there is a distracting piece of 'purple' in the corner.

Technicals:

I like the slight 'bokeh' look to the background but IMHO the whole image is slightly out of focus. I am not sure where your camera is metering from but the top of the flower appears a little blown out whilst the bee is quite dark and has lost a lot of detail because of this.

My personal thought:

I too took a flower shot for this challenge and knew that there would be many others that did so, so I wasn't expecting to do very well. For a flower shot to grab the viewers attention here at DPC it needs to be something unusual / out of the ordinary and for me this shot is neither of those things.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First of all congratulations on your second highest scoring image :o)

Composition:

I really like your composition, the 'ball' and hand are placed nicely in the frame and the lines of 'electricity' have worked with you well here! The only thing I may have been tempted to change is in the bottom right handside you can see what appears to be the base of the 'ball' and for me the image would be even better if you cropped this out.

Technicals:

This is very well exposed with no blown out parts on the lights in the 'ball'. The lighting on the top of the hand is nice as is the blue lighting underneath and you have captured some good detail in the hand.

My personal thought:

This challenge featured a few shots using a similar prop and I feel that this maybe why your shot didn't score better.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Composition:

It certainly appears to be a nice place! I too like the reflection of the lights in the water. I may have been tempted to crop the left handside to the nearest pillar which may have helped lead the viewer along the pillars and into the image.

The horizon is slightly tilted and would be helped by straightening in Photoshop (or the editing software you use).

Technicals:

The most important thing here is why did you apply soft focus in your editing? Night shots always benefit from placing the camera on a solid, stable surface such as a tripod. Beacause they require a longer shutter speed the camera needs to be as still as possible. This image looks as though it may have been slightly blurred and you have added the soft focus to try and compensate for this but I am afraid it hasn't worked. I do like how the lights are not blown out and there is some nice detail in the water.

Thanks for taking the time to look Karma, I really appreciate it. I have just downloaded the Casting Crowns song, thank you :o)

I agree, I am very picky about my shots and can find plenty of holes in the "technicals" of this image but you have hit the nail on the head, this is all about the emotional aspect :o)

I too wondered if Moses had stood where we were. Half way up the mountain there is a pool of water where it is said Moses spent time. It's a strange feeling to be somewhere like this and imagine who may have been before you.

Greetings from the Criti....

Whoops! ;o) Hi Andi :o)

For what its worth here's my opinion on your pencils..

Nice choice of colours and the position of the pencils in the frame is good. I'd like to see what the shot looks like in 'landscape' format rather than portrait as for some reason I keep tilting my head to look at this! A good use of selective focus and the DOF helps with your attempt to make the subject 'abstract'. The lighting on the underside of the bottom pencil doesn't seem quite right to me and is a little distracting as it doesnt 'match' that of the topside.

Of course, all these things are just MHO ;o)

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Composition:

I definitely agree with your commenters with regards to the placement of the model in this shot. The models pose is good but to fit the challenge she would have looked better in the distance with the train track leading the viewer to her. I am also wondering what would have been behind her if you took the image the other way, as it is at the moment I find the background too busy and distracting.

Technicals:

Portraits are not an area I know very much about at all but I will do my best to offer some advice. First of all, to me, the lighting looks very dull. There is no real detail in the models face and the colours don't 'pop'. It was obviously not the brightest of days so that hasn't helped here. Also the background has a slight out of focus look (it could be my eyes!), I would like to either see a shallower depth of field or have the background completely in focus.

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.
