::: Critique Club :::

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

Interesting to read the comments you have recieved ... they are helpful from what I see .. if you feel they are helpful please tick the box so that the person making them knows that.

There are some interesting personal opinions in these comments .. and it is up to you what you take on board .. ... alll critiques are of course personal opinion ... choose to use the information as you like.

First Impression - the most important one:
Interesting shot ... I want a bit more ... something more of the story in the picture.

Composition:
The picture is very centred around the childs face. have a try at google and enter ' rule of thirds' this is a really good starting rule to learn ... I found that it has helped take me from very basic and centred shots to thinking about the composition more and what else the viewer needs to see to balance a shot.

Subject:
Every child is a success story to their parent ... success is also a self determed thing .. ones success may be anothers failure ... your success is great though.

Technical (Colour and light):
The focus is not good ... it is not too bad in the thumbnail .. but people vote on the larger image. the catchlights in her eyes are lovely though ... this is a good thing ....

To grow its vote?:
Working on getting things focused helps ... this in itself is a skill ... trust me I am still good at unfocused shots .. but I have learnt not to enter them as this is something that gets scored badly. This is a pretty picture .. but people do look for a story in picture .. maybe in her mothers arms that would have told a story a little better.

Summary:
You did ok ... you are going to do better and improve ... keep shooting and this will come naturally.

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

Just a note ... every critique is a personal opinion .. it is up to you have you choose to use or ignore the information provided.

First Impression - the most important one:
Top ten .. wow ... lovely image .. well taken shot.

Composition:
The works for this shot .. things I would think about are .. where am I taking the eye of the viewer ... how am I creating something that will hold a person for the moment longer .. I think that you have created something to hold a viewer for slightly longer but my eyes get slightly caught up on the blackness above her head and stays there.

Subject:
Success like so many things in life is self-determined ... so yes I think this meets the challenge.

Technical (Colour and light):
I like the reds and how this colours pops or the picture .. getting and taking the picture with her shadow is fantastic ... it feels a little close to the bottom of the shot .. was there more black that you could have used below this or the edge of the stage ...

To grow its vote?:
Hey this got top ten .. which is fantastic ... to improve just try diffeernt crops etc.

Summary:
Fantastic shot ... well done .. she is a beautiful woman is a beautful situation and you took great advantage of it all.

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

First Impression - the most important one:
Interesting composition ... nice lines ....

Composition:
The leading lines in this picture are great ... your eye goes up the line of the tree and gets dragged further into the picture .. unfortunately they end at the sidewalk and that doesn't do the shot justice.

Subject:
Meets the challenge .. and does so with gusto.

Technical (Colour and light):
The DOF is a little shallow ... that the base of the tree is totally blurred means you can't see that it is 'broken' off persay. It is also really dark ... maybe a little fill flash would have helpted ... or seeing that the path is shiny a different angle may have allowed more natural light.

To grow its vote?:
Think about the angles of the shot .. take many pictures and when reviewing and selecting your entry think about how others will see your picture .. and the questions that they will ask.

Summary:
Great work .. second entry and improving .. you are doing well.

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club. I know this is your first entry ... so hope this is not too painful.

First Impression - the most important one:
The picture is a little on the small side, maximising the entrys size is a great way to create impact from a shot ... you can work a picture up to 640 on the longest side. You can also work it to 150 kbs .. which allows you much more data in a shot.

Composition:
I like the lines going backwards and draging the eye into the shot .... I looked at your portfolio .. which is still empty I am not sure what you know about the simple rules of photography ... might pay to do a search on "rule of thirds" which is one i find really handy to take note of.

Subject:
does it or doesn't it ... I think you got a lot of people not knowing what you were trying to portray. Once people can see you comments, you are ok .. but people can't during voting .. so a picture must be able to carry itself.

Technical (Colour and light):
Black and white sometimes works .. but it doesn't seem to add anything to this shot ... the colours may have worked better. the slight flaring at the top of the picture is slightly distracting as well.

To grow its vote?:
Think about how others will view the picture ... will they get it .. how much explaining do you need .. that sort of thing ... this is great to challenge peoples thinking outside the square . but sometimes that doesn't work either.

Summary:
Good picture .. I can see good things coming from you in future ... keep it up.

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

First Impression - the most important one:
You got what you want .... a pile of controversy :)

Composition:
The fountain hits thirds .. the top of the house hits thirds .. but it still feels centred ... not sure why ...

Subject:
Does it or not ... really I am from NZ .. and it doesn't do much for me ... but in your country it may.

Technical (Colour and light):
Nice Colours and natural light .. both work well .. .also a good sharp picture.

To grow its vote?:
Do something that says something to all .. .the problem is that this site is not made up of mainly americans .. so it doesn't say much to a lot of people ... and those it does it seems you offended some of them.

Summary:
I like this as an architechture shot ... which is currently voting and think it would have done ok in there. But is a personal statement and I think worked well for that. Keep it up .. I personally like challenging peoples thinking too.

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

First Impression - the most important one:
Wow .. always like these shots ... does this mean though that too many people do this?

Composition:
This is a very centred shot. Working towards the rule of thirds would help to create a different point of interest ... or taking a look at how to create a golden tringle ... something to take away that centre focus.

Subject:
does it meet the challenge .. well it does if you are trying to successfully do a stop motion shot. But others may not see it that way .. which is why I think there are a few DNMC type votes.

Technical (Colour and light):
This is really an amazing colour ... it has a great depth as well. so very unusual. It is reasonably sharp and the lighting used here is perfect.

To grow its vote?:
it is becoming a little cliched this type of shot .. but that should never put you off ... but work towards meet composition rules and see if that helps.

Summary:
great shot ... good colours ... I am stunned. :)
