::: Critique Club :::

Hi, my name is Kari and I am from the Critique Club. You asked for your image Bubble Burst to be criqued ... lets hope it is painless.

First Impression - the most important one:
Great capture, extremely natural .. lovely colours ... pretty much on thirds.

Composition:
I feel for your kiddy .. but I love the shot. He has used a great colour pipe cleaner, which gives a lovely shot of colour. He is also caught unawares - eyes shut and still blowing ... looks totally unexpected.

Subject:
Great subject. You hit the nail on the button. First entry and in the top 50% ... I hope we see more of this.

Technical (Colour and light):
Very natural colours .. and that is something that is good about this shot. Take note of what the commentors have said about the flash lighting ... although if it is needed ... sometimes using a lamp to counter a flash and work against artifacts works.

To get a Ribbon?:
I think that the DOF ain't too bad for a first go, I would encourage you to practice it, it takes time to get stuff like that right. I like the cropping, but I always try a couple of different ways to make sure it works.

Summary:

Good image size, lovely picture, well taken ... çome back and take some more challenges .. they can get quite addictive.

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.

Hi, I am Kari and from the critique club.

Welcome to DPC and your first challenge.

First Impression - the most important one:
Lovely black and white picture, good patttern, and meets the challenge.

Composition:
This is a well composed shot. The pinecone tip is well on vertical thirds, and the dark line behind is on horizontal thirds.

Subject:
Nice choice of subject matter, well done on this.

Technical (Colour and light):
I found the actual pinecone a little underlit. Perhaps a slight adjustment to the way you lit the object may have created a little more depth. I think that perhaps a little bit of sharpening may also have helped to further distinguish those patterns for people.

Think about when to enter a black and white picture as well. I think sometimes that the natural colours of a shot actually add to the image rather than detract.

To grow its vote?:
To was a solid first entry. As you go on with the entries, think about the balance in the picture you are taking. With the rule of thirds continue to look at how you crop yuour entries.

One thing that may have counted against you was the size of your picture. Try to maximise your picture, so look at the longest side being 640. You may also have lost some detail in the save process down to a .jpg ... look at the optimisation options.

Summary:
Well done, keep it up.

Hi, I am Kari and from the critique club.

I really do like the picture that you took of the Sunset .. and it is my turn to critique your entry into patterns.

First Impression - the most important one:
I like the image, it sparked my imagination, I love colour and this has strong colours which are gorgeous.

Composition:
I think you have done well. You have cropped out what you think didn't work and stuck with what you did. I think that it is quite dark and this may have detracted slightly from the patterns, this is something that you pick up from playing around with the brightness and contrast a bit more.

Being fairly new here myself I often do a number of edits before making up my mind which one to enter. This gives me a clearer thought process on entry. You may do this already. You will continue to see improvements.

Subject:
I think that the choice of subject was too esoteric for a lot of the voters and you can see this in a couple of the comments you received. Personally I scored you above average, it is out of the box and sometimes left field doesn't score as well.

Technical (Colour and light):
The colours are nicely contrasting, but maybe a little dark. The Depth of field that you have used works well in this shot and it is clear. You have done well it ensuring that the picture takes the maximum size of pixels 640 longest side (some entries are small and hard to see at times) ... I am not sure what programme you are editing your picture, but there may be a way of optimising the picture when you resize and save as a jpeg to allow your picture to keep more detail.

To grow its vote?:
It is a lovely shot, the problems aren't huge. Sticking to the safe side of challenges would grow your vote, but challenging the voters you may find more fun. So go for it.

Summary:
I understand from the threads what you are saying about "not having a fancy camera with all those lenses etc".. but you have to work with what you have. And you are learning and starting to work with it. You don't need a fancy camera, and really you gotta work with what you got. Just take time and learn about your camera and your software and play.

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.

Cheers

This is an intersting picture, but I think that the size choosen should have been large e.g. 640 to optimise the shot.

Great shot, I love the story and I think the other shot would have been good .. but through the story telling this is so much better.
