I'm trying to figure out the appeal in this shot and I'm at a loss. It needs a subject. Not everything needs one but if it's not going to have one then I think there needs to be some sort of symbotic/zen quality to it and I don't find that here. Sorry.

I can see the ball tucked away on the other side but the way the defender's arm comes out it makes it look like the ball carrier doesn't have the ball at all. I know you can't do much about the background but it would have been nice had those people were actually interested in the action on the field.

While the light is good to show shape it's not the defining characteristic like you would expect it to be. Usually when something is shot against a black background you immediate think studio so expectations are high for fantastic lighting.

That said it may not even be your light but rather the way the subject is floating in the frame. The brighter areas against that black background makes the light feel harsher than it actually is and for still life you don't really want that. Had there been a table or cloth that was catching some of the light I bet this would have a totally different feel to it.

Mind you this isn't a bad shot or anything just giving you my thoughts on the lighting. Good luck.

Not sure if that's rain or part of some texture but that downward motion works very well. It acts like gravity pulling down the bird as it tries to fly away.

Cool shot. I like that the wings are blurred as it gives it lift and balance. I think had it been in focus it would feel like the butterfly was going to fall over due to the tilt.
