I really enjoyed this during voting, including the entertainment contained within - which is only heightened when you see what is really going on. This got a 7 from me. Adding to my Favorites. Beautiful lighting and simplicity.

oh - and while I saw it during viewing/voting, I now know one of the elements that appealed in the image was the line of beauty - thanks for sharing/teaching (and thank you too skewsme)

I gave this an 8 and really liked the way you split the image into 'two' - black and white - and the simple, beautiful, natural scene itself, 'transported' from what you would have seen, into an artistic photograph of a moment in time.

Yes he's a mongrel of some kind, half jack russell half something with really big paws! He was a rescue dog so we don't really know.

Acknowledging your note about the super paws

and rescued - excellent - he is obviously living a good life now and has a fancy cow collar to boot (which I also noticed during voting)

First Impressions
Nice shallow DOF (depth of field), nice colors. Whilst the concept of delicate comes over even with the shallow depth of field, for me it would have been stronger for this particular Challenge had the wings been in sharper focus with a little further depth of field. I gave this a 5 during voting.

Photograph Information, Technicals & Composition Review
The composition is nice and balanced, with the bee in the center of the image, however I wonder whether having an off-centered main subject would have help give the image as a whole more of an edge. For example, if you remove the lavender flower head from top left of frame (ie: bold crop) and take a little further off the top, it reframes the bee/bee's wings and also leaves the added element/interest of the other lavender flowers.

I see you used an extension tube and wonder whether there was a tripod involved as well. Handheld would be very difficult, especially when you are trying to get the delicate little wings in sharp focus & within the depth of field you desire.

A deeper DOF (perhaps 4.6 or more) would have allowed more wing to come into play and would have also minimized the overexposed parts of the flowers, etc. The colors are certainly nice and complement each other, perhaps some subtle pushing of them in pp (post processing) would have also allowed them to be better showcased as well.

Comments, Score & Placement Review
65/143 is over the half way mark in a Challenge and a decent showing for your first entry at DPC (congratulations). Your one comment does perhaps give you an indication of your score - sometimes you have to read into comments and/or apply a filter. Of course, an average of 7.0 from your 'Commenters', tells you what your commenter gave you.

Summary
Sometimes voters (myself included) like to be 'hit over the head' with the Challenge subject/theme. In this case, I think, as mentioned above, a little more wing(s) would have made this a stronger entry.

First Impressions
Nice colors, nice abstract. Good fit for the Challenge, which I didn't vote on.

Photograph Information, Technicals & Composition Review
I like the composition, but at first wondered whether it was upside down (or may benefit from a 'flip'). My eye falls on the right places in the image where the focus is best. The quality seems good and for an abstract style image, carries it over cleanly and well.

Comments, Score & Placement Review
A little surprised by placement of 32, however the subtlety of the 'bubbles' maybe contributed to that. Again, 5.70 is a little surprising, especially regarding the quality of the image itself.

The comments seem to clearly articulate the appeal.

Summary
Nice abstract that perhaps may have packed a little more punch with a bit of 'pp pop' via tweaking of some colors and a little more depth/clarity added. Perhaps even a slightly tighter crop on the right to emphasize, but still stands good as is.

PS
I see you've been at DPC for some time and this is your first Challenge entry - congratulations on taking the plunge and getting a decent score first up.
