| 07/12/2008 01:50:12 PM | The final breath of a lightbulb...by Patrick_RComment: Critique Club Review:
Color, Saturation, and Hue: Colors work well for this image. Saturation levels are effective, nothing is over saturated.
Brightness and contrast: Contrast may be a little high, as the brightness is high enough that areas are burned out. The area around the element is brighter than I'd like. Yes it is burning, but I'd like to see a little more detail than the vertical blob. A tough request I agree, but this is an advanced editing challenge, and to get the top scores, the tough things need to be done. The smoke area at the top of the recepticle is also burned out and featureless. I see you accidently left the speed at 1600. A lower speed should have given you more tonal range. (But then you knew that.)
Focus and depth of field are good. The background is nicely softened to prevent distraction.
The pull chain is a distraction for me. If there were a remote switch or breaker than could have been operated by an assistant, that could have helped.
The reflection dead center on the subject, which is also dead center in the frame, hurt a bit also.
I do like the smoke and the way it wraps around the socket.
I also like the color tones. I'm a sucker for that amber, tobacco-ish feel.
Overall an interseting image with quite a bit of potential. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

Color, Saturation and Hue: Saturation is appropriate. Looks like there might be a color shift towards yellow.
Brightness and Contrast: Contrast appears a little low, and brightness a little bright. At the center of the lamp it appears almost hazy which can happen when contrast is low and image is bright.
Focus and depth of field: Focus is sharp enough, depth of field should have been either shallower, or deeper. The rim of the shade at the top appears to be going a little soft.
Subjective opinion: Picture is too bright. The interior of the shade looks washed out. The ends of the chain pulls compete with the light bulbs for attention. Your background outside the lampshade would have worked better in soft focus, or allowed to go dark. There is something (string, wire, crack, ? not sure) leading away from the lamp at about the 10 o'clock position, that is a little distracting also.
I do like the idea of the two out of three bulbs working. This fits the 1890s theme well. I also like the clear bulbs. Too many would just slap softlight modern bulbs in there and clicked away. |

| 07/12/2008 10:30:34 AM | G R E E N by bnileshComment: I think you are going to get a few "does not meet challenge", comments, because there does seem to be a lot of green. However, this is an excellent photo. The eyes are amazing and the two greens are different enough to work for me. Skin tones are great, the eyes are amazing. Depth of field was well used to eliminate distractions. Focus is great, I love all the super detail. I could see this in a magazine, a travel ad,or a gallery. This is one of those that you can look at day after day and not get tired of seeing it. You have a 10 from me. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 07/12/2008 10:23:49 AM | Pink Gorillas in the Mistby JaimeVinasComment: Nice humorous take on the challenge. Depth of field could be a little shorter to make background even softer. Litteralists will not see any mist. Cute photo and made me chuckle. 7 | Photographer found comment helpful. |

| 07/11/2008 04:13:50 PM | Another Night in the Cityby david_1190Comment: I think that this one comes across as more of an intersection, than an urban landscape.
The time lapse was done well. But it is at street level, and there is one building to be seen.
I'm not sure what the blue lights are, but the one at the upper left competes with the rest of the image, and distracts the eye a bit. Were this an advanced edtiting challenge, I would recommend cloning it out.
The starbursts work well. Focus is nice and sharp.
You might want to play with the white balance a bit. The colors appear a little shifted. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

Color Saturation and Hue: Colors are accurate and not over saturated.
Brightness and Contrast: Shadows hold nice detail, but hightlight areas, especially where the water cascades over the rock, are blown out and featureless.
Focus and depth of field: Focus is nice and sharp. Depth of field is appropriated for this subject.
I think you already know what killed your score. It isn't a light bulb. Personally I don't vote ones for not meeting challenge, but you can see how many there are that do. Take heart from the ones who voted at the other end, and voted how they liked the image independent of the challenge subject.
I like the way you used the branches to frame the waterfall. A nice touch. The slower exposure to give the water a motion blur worked well too, and it is not so long that that it gives it the overworked cliche of the smokey foggy effect.
You may have won the brown ribbon, but you did it with a pretty nice picture.
Hope to see you in another challenge soon.

What a grabber of a photo. And when you see the original, it is even that much more amazing.
I could stare back at this one for a long time... | Photographer found comment helpful. |

Color Saturation and Hue: Colors are realistic and accurate.
Brightness and Contrast: Both are done well, no detail is lost in the highlight areas.
Focus and depth of field: The focus is nice and sharp, but the depth of field looks a little shallow. The wing goes soft as it gets closer to the camera. Though this may also be motion blur. The background is nicely soft, so as to eliminate distraction.
Image meets the challenge well. I can't tell if the crop was intentional. Images like this one, often what you see is all the photographer could get. I too would like to have seen more of the bird. As it is, he could very well have been mounted on a stick outside of a moving vehicle.
