ergoComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Wow! I had to pull this one. Do you really need an indepth critique?!
Thank you for including camera information. In the future, please also include post processing information when requesting an in depth critique.
Personally, I love the image. I think it would do well with less of a border as the border seems to control the image, but that is a personal taste thing.
When creating an image, one must keep in mind some photo basics: Composition, lighting, tonal balance, focus, DOF, and POV.
Composition: I think this composition works for the subject. Some may argue that it could be cropped on the right and on the left but I think this image needs the room the current crop provides. There is a nice flow through the image from left to right - from the black space, down to the rug, the centered man's foot, up through his body to his face, to the other man's foot, up through his body to his face, then out to the light. I think this works well as it moves your eye over the entire range of the image.
The lighting here works as the most important aspect of the image, the men's faces, are clearly defined. It is also balanced, one in shadow, one in highlight, mirroring the image itself. I think the lighting may be a bit extreme due to the challenge topic but can't say if a lessening would improve the image. I like the contrast and think it works effectively.
Tonal Balance: Your tones are balanced. You cover the range of darks and lights effectively. And neither overwhelms the other.
Focus: Your focus is dead on.
DOF: I think the DOF works here. I will make an assumption that maybe you were using a 50MM? You seem to be far enough away that the DOF is not too short.
POV: My guess is that you were standing as your head seems to be a little above the higher man in the image. It hink this straight on approach works for the image.
You've captured texture well here and it adds depth to the image. The element I appreciate most in this image is the contrast between the two men: One is 'dark,' one is 'light'; one is almost smiling, one is almost frowning; one is relaxed and open, one is tight and controlled. You show so much of their personality of the moment that it adds greatly to the image.
The only thing I could say to improve this image for me is to ease up on the border.
