Thank you for all the wonderful comments, as some of you have already guessed this was an infrared image with the levels adjusted to make the sky black, but as a byproduct I lost some detail in the forground. The shot was taken about five minutes from my home in a wildlife preserve in northern california at about 2pm, a bright hot day with not a cloud in the sky.
