Very nice B/W presentation. This scene works well for the challenge. I know it's a minor thing, and rarely one worth commenting on, but your choice of border gives the photo a nice break from the voting page without being overbearing.

Good luck in the challenge.

Greetings from the Critique Club

Yellow, hazy, harsh...why's he walking away?

Looking Deeper

This was a tough challenge, both for the submitter and the viewer/voter. The challenge theme/description left a lot out there for interpretation. To communicate the concept of 'Misunderstanding' in a photo without a long, wordy title was difficult.

Your photo tells a story, or at least part of a story. The man in the photo, or the observer watching, could be 'Misunderstood'. He's traveling the train tracks. Does this mean he's a drifter; homeless perhaps? Even the back of the sign leaves a question mark; what does it say?

The conditions and presentation in your image work well with this story. The glaring sun, the desolate surroundings.

Compositionally the tracks present a nice set of leading lines, complemented by the overhead wires going the same direction. I'd had liked less sky, but then it throws the man more into the center... The coloration of the sky is a little strange also...almost a peachy color. Why not white or grey?

In the end I think this image required too much thinking for the average "click and keep on going" voter. Missing the eye-candy, fun, clean & simple approach probably took away some scoring potential - but it is an engaging photo nonetheless.

Questions? Feel free to send me a PM for any clarification. Thanks!

From the thumnail I thought this was a wheel from a kid's toy truck or something. :-) As a photo for the challenge it's "ok". I guess subject-wise it's not that interesting (nothing personal).

I really like the bg pattern - cute! :-) Wish both eyes were illuminated as well as the right (viewer's right, cat's left) one. Very good control on the wht/blk points. Good luck in the challenge.

I like the isolated king, and usually a centered subject isn't going to come across that well, but in this case by centering the king it seems stronger (matches your title well this way). The image does feel a little underexposed. A minor tweak with levels or a histogram adjustment would help some. Last thing...the little details...clean the board before shooting (or do so in post-processing when allowed). :-)

All JMO of course. Good luck in the challenge.

Kind of an interesting idea. Get the feeling of this being extremely staged (not that it wouldn't be...but selling it without the viewer thinking it is, is tricky). The above comment aside, this would do much better if it was in focus. Most of the image is quite soft. If the upright glass & stem were at least sharp the other items wouldn't matter so much.

Very well balanced scene here. Looks like the focal point was dead centered on the roll of the waves coming/going ashore, which works well. The gull in the upper reaches of this composition is just icing on the cake. Well done!

Great shot, great title...perfect for the challenge. This is the kind of imagery that gets printed large for gallery display. Very nice.

I really like the simplicity of this. Perfect scene for this challenge. Just a hint of green in the moss embedded in the seams to confirm it's a color shot. Very nice.

Simple, yet very effective subject for this challenge. Plenty of visual interest to hold the viewers attention. I can almost hear the sound of the water going over the lip. Well done!
