This is a fabulous image, and the only reason I can think why this didn't do even better is the background colour. The green of the background and the stem don't quite work together (IMHO). Otherwise, this is a great capture - congratulations on top 20!

In regards to your thread - the first thing that comes to mind is the composition. The rule of thirds exists for a reason - it helps make a documentary type shot interesting. You're shot is perfectly centred, and closely cropped at the edges. Putting a bit of empty space on the right, in the direction its eyes are looking, may convey a bit more interest to the casual observer.

Also, what other said about slightly harsh lighting on the subject. You used a relatively slow shutter speed, so I imagine this was the best of several shots, but with a bit of curves or levels in photoshop, you could take a bit of the harsh light off the cuttlefish.
