i have gone out and taken shots like this myself! it is so hard to make our beautiful sky turn out like you see it! this really is a nice shot, the blue sky is a gorgeous periwinkle color, and the moon, small as it is, manages to make me feel very small! compositionally, it is nice. i like where you placed the moon and venus in the frame. technically, you did well, also. i guess the only thing that bothers me a little is the fact that it is almost "too" empty! i really dont mind the negative space feel at all, i jsut wish this one had a tad bit more in it to give it more impact. otherwise, very nice job! |

this has the makings of an awesome photo! the colors are fabulous and the composition great. i love the starkness of the branches against the sky, and then the contrast of the dark shadows against the white branches! i also really like how the trunks fan out in opposite directions and the smaller branches spread out to meet them---gives the whole picture sort of an "organized chaos" sort of feel! :) i wonder if you had crouched down and shot more upwards if it would have looked even cooler? technically---this is where i am having a hard time. i feel like something is wrong but cant really place my finger on it? is it slightly out of focus? or is it oversharpened? i really cant tell because it just seems to make my eyes feel all jittery! other than that, however, it is a great photo! keep up the good work! | Photographer found comment helpful. |

this is a really neat photo! i love the windmills and the background. they are sort of mystical, almost magical! compositionally, you did well. i really like how the still windmill is shoved to the right of the frame offset by the spinning one, very nice. the upward angle works really well here too--gives it a larger than life feel. technically, well done. the more i lokk at this photo, the more i am drawn in to the detail! very nice work! |

this is really cool, what a great idea! it really does look like a crazily lit flower at first glance! the composition of this shot is almost perfect--i may have pulled out just a teeny bit more on the right. still, i love it. i love the contrasting blue and black colors. technically, very good considering the low light source. i wonder if opening the aperature would have helped any? dunno, but at any rate, the grain doesnt bother me at all, i think it works well here. all in all, this is a wonderful idea, very well executed! nice work! | 12/09/2002 03:39:46 AM | Story of a churchby joshuazhangComment: i really love pictures of old churches! i took a million myself in italy! ;) this one has a sort of haunted feel to it, perhaps because of the way the gravestones are leaning---but i love that about it! i also really like the shadows--they could almost be darker in my opinion. the composition is nice, and although i find myself wondering if it would have looked like if you had taken a couple of steps to the left, im glad you didnt because you would have lost the shadows from the gravestones. the upward angle is really cool, it adds to the spooky feel by seeming like the church is really looming over you. technically, the focus seems just a tiny bit soft and the color almost monotone--like i said before, i might have liked to see a bigger difference in the stones and shadows, but that is just me! all in all, really nice photo! keep up the good work! |

| 12/06/2002 05:32:25 PM | Colorado Drought 2002by vtruanComment: This photo tells a great story of a drought. You can practically feel the heat rising from the dry, parched earth. The detail is wonderful, from the dark depth of the crevasses to the fine lines on top of the soil. It makes a very nice close up shot. I think, however, I might have liked a different angle for more impact--perhaps an angle close to the ground as is, but then reaching farther into the horizon to encompass a broader area---to show just how desolate this drought really is. Technically, this is really nice--your darks and lights have good contrast. I like the slight glare of the white because it enhances how bright and hot the sun really is. All in all, I really like this, very nice work! | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 12/06/2002 02:47:40 PM | Little Boys & Big Dreamsby RackatComment: This is wonderful! I really like these silhouette photographs. This photo really invokes the sense of a young boy conquering a fear or overcoming a challenge. Compositionally, you did a wonderful job. I find myself staring at the background, wondering what it would look like if you had taken a couple of steps to the right and eliminated the tree--having the boy just against the sky? But then perhaps you would not have the perfect halo of light that surrounds him. The sky is just gorgeous, a perfect blend of colors and light.
Technically the shot is great, if not just a teeny bit out of focus on the boy--maybe it is just my eyes but it seems to get a little softer around his torso. This doesnt detract from the overall impact of the photo, tho. Post processing looks great, love the levels on the sky. I dont think you could have sharpened anymore without losing quality around the edges of the rock and stick. Overall, wonderful job! |
