Hello from the critique club

An appealing image that fulfils the challenge brief

That looks like some spectacular festival, I̢۪ve just been looking at your other recent entry from there too. Whilst I like the colourful detail of your subject I feel you have missed a great opportunity to really wow the viewer with a much more dynamic image. Had you got the person really animated with a much more aggressive facial and body pose you could have really scared the viewer and probably got a more responsive result. I agree with Georges the cropping is a shame and also unnecessary I would have thought, but I do prefer the off-centre pose. Thanks Erin for showing us an interesting character in his colourful costume.

An appealing image that fulfils the challenge brief

A nice pleasing portrait of your father that conveys a happy gentle nature at peace with himself. The bokeh and flare of the background works well but that same flare is also its undoing, there is just too much of it in the important areas of detail, ie., his face. The flare is such that it is not flattering indeed, it is to the detriment of cleanly portraying his facial features. I think also, wide open is too shallow a DOF especially with the flare everything is just too soft. Having said all that Daniel, you have a lovely portrait that will continue to mean a lot to you in the coming years, well done.

An appealing image that contributes well to the challenge

I like the creative use you have made of your wide angle lens here. Your human is isolated and key to the image as a whole and therefore, in my mind, fulfils the challenge brief well, a portrait doesn̢۪t always have to the obvious facial jobby. I like the way the lens has emphasised the tailfin, I also like your bold use of contre-jour, the backlit flag, the shadows, the rays, it all works well for me. I̢۪m sorry your entry didn̢۪t do much better for you Ronnie, thats the blind nature of the DPC beast sometimes.

An interesting image that contributes to the challenge

It looks more like the truck failed to stop! I̢۪m not too sure how effective your image is at conveying the message of change, the need to fill up with fuel is still current even though this particular venue is not. We can see that time is taking its toll on this site and slowly helping it to deteriorate but the change is very slow. I think something that represents a more recent development that impacts everyday life would have been better, for example, a wind farm generating power. I like the mono conversion and particularly like the sky. Thanks for your entry Louis.

Your image encapsulates the theme of the song well. Good props, I like your composition, focus and DOF it all works well together, the mono processing is good too. The text complements and explains the theme well. Sorry you didn̢۪t get any comments during the challenge, I hope this makes up for it, well done Fabio.

An interesting image that contributes well to the open challenge

As you say, this is a popular viewpoint but nonetheless still very appealing. This is well executed with a good level of detail throughout the image. I am not in favour of a sterile scene completely lacking in people especially a cityscape and one that you expect to see plenty of people in so I like the person in the lower left and those on the bridge its minimal but essential. There is quite a high key feel to your mono conversion which works well though the rather bland and largely uninteresting sky would have benefited from cropping in favour of the immediate foreground especially using the wide angle to accentuate the near leading lines. A good job well done Jonathon.

A good action capture of formation flight. I like that you have used a shutter speed fast enough to catch the planes with good sharp detail (I have to disagree with one of your commenters) and yet still slow enough to show the motion blur of the props as opposed to the all too often used too high shutter speed that freezes the prop making it look like a cut-out in the sky. Composition-wise I would prefer it if the planes weren̢۪t quite so central, I like the smoke trail appearing from the top left but the planes would be more dynamic if they were further to the lower right of the frame.

Your panoramic study has some lovely colours and detail with some good pin points of light to highlight the foliage and in particular the bows of the boat. I like the detail of the boat with the lit bows and the thrust of the prop clearly evident it is moving through the water with some haste and determination, hence your apt title. The storm cloud sky is and essential and very effective element of the scene. Each to their own opinion but I have to disagree with one of your commenters I think this composition and crop works really well.

A lovely bird study that contributes well to the open challenge

A very well executed image that captures the essential detail of the bird really well. The important part of the image is good sharp focus on the eyes which has been nicely achieved and in turn the feather detail is clearly showing through this together with its lovely markings makes it a most appealing image. The pose is good too, I am not familiar with this bird perhaps this is a normal pose but it is certainly unusual in my experience. The onoy minor point I have to agree with flaherma are the two dust spots to the right of the frame, once seen they do become a distraction and would benefit from rectification. Well done for your high score and placing Anton.
