Hello from the critique club

An interesting image that contributes to the challenge

Up to your usual high standard Ronnie another nicely captured alligator in its green mossy environment. Your title sums it up too, careful is the order of the day, its malevolent presence is a warning in itself, careful!

A lovely glowing sunset and reflecting sea, as you say, a glorious sunset. Where I think this is not working quite so well as it could is in the softness throughout, particularly in the wet sand where those reflections could have been in stunningly sharp contrast to an acceptable softness in the sky and water. Given your shutter speed it must be down to the HDR merge differences in the reflections between the three images? I think also if the area of dry sand could have been excluded this could have added impact to the end result. It is a lovely image Janine but in a challenge of this nature you’re up against some tough competition.

Your title says it all, it is a lovely contrast between the snowy foreground and the darker background of the sea. Your exposure is perfect with a lovely white glow in the snow against the equally lovely tones of the background sea and sky. What is not working quite so well for me are the snowflakes themselves, they are so small they are not convincing, indeed I find them so distracting they detract more than they add, I think this would have been better without them either through timing or even cloning. If they had been larger and more of them they would have contributed significantly to the scene.

An appealing image that contributes well to the challenge

Hah yes, well observed Jonathon. As a sucker for shadows I’m gonna love this anyway, those shadows are really nice together with the rim lighting its working really well. The added humour of the scene with their feet off the ground and brought to our attention by your snappy title makes it all work superbly, I like it. The mono conversion is nice. Possibly a little less detail in the background would help the people stand out with less distraction but its not really an issue. Nice observation and capture well done Jonathon.

Indeed, most imperious! Ms Whitesteer is so wonderfully appealing I love her, the expression is beautifully disapproving. I like the high key presentation it works really well and the detail in her fur is excellent, a great exposure. The only minor fault that distracts me a little is the shadowy patches between her ear and the background cow perhaps these could be rectified. Nice one Susan, well captured.

Your foreground wave bokeh has transformed this from a straight forward record shot of a boat at sea to one with special interest and very unique, well done Drake. Your timing and viewpoint have made great use of this situation to show us something that just wouldn’t be seen with the naked eye, I like it. Composition-wise whilst we do have an interesting sky I think I would prefer to see less of it in favour of this wonderful unique foreground, indeed it could almost be floating on an erupting effervescent sea.

An interesting image that contributes to the challenge

This lit cityscape taken from this high vantage point certainly has plenty to look at and the couple doing exactly that adds to the interest of the scene. I like that they are not central but may prefer them a little further to the left and perhaps a little more engaged with each other ie., embracing in a mutually friendly way. Whilst there is good overall technical control I find the brightness of the sky against the lights of the city a little disconcerting and wish that it was darker giving greater contrast to the scene as a whole. Having said all that, I see from your profile this is just your second challenge, welcome to DPC and good luck with your future submissions Miew.

Cor blimey Drake, you produce a lovely image like this, a 6+ score and 7th place and NO comments? You really have got your wildlife images well nailed, this gorgeous splash of detailed colour against the near mono background of the driving snow, it almost looks like a post-processing desat but I don’t believe it is. The composition is good, I like the diagonal of the twig and that there is a little more space to the right for the bird to look into. What I like most is the snow that is slowly building up around the beak, as you say, the snow was really coming down. Anyway, well done, a lovely image justly rewarded, I hope this critique makes up for the lack of comments.

An interesting image that meets the challenge well.

Nice one Susan! A very convincing job well done, Christophe's smoky tuition certainly paid dividends. The amount of burn, the flame, the smoke all work really together with your lovely selfie, all in all a most effective entry. I like your commenters remarks!

Hello from the critique club

An interesting image that does not meet the challenge.

Oh Lydia, what a shame after all that hard work but whilst I like your thinking I think it fails to meet the challenge in the strictest sense of the challenge brief. A look at the winning entries hopefully helps clarify what I mean better than my clumsy description but I think this more closely resembles your tractor 'superimposed' upon the background rather than juxtaposed, ie., side by side or close by. I think you were right to include your hand to make it obvious that a cut and paste was not involved and that this was a 'live' manipulation. Sorry it didn't quite work as you hoped, better luck next time...
