Very nice. Would have probably scored higher with a complete sun in the frame..

Hi Dave,

Greetings from the Critique Club.

This is an excellent entry for the 30 second challenge and has all the elements for success, hence the strong scoring with the voters. Good DOF, Excellent and thoughtful composition.

If anything the image lacks a little impact. To really capture a voters attention you need that WOW factor to grab them in that few seconds window as they skip through the entries.

The headlights of the on coming vehices are a little burnt out and tend to dominate the shot a littl.

Overall this is a great photo showing a real eye for composition and good technique. If you have access to return to this scene can I suggest that you try again earlier in the evening as a little color in the sky can really help bring the shot to life (I suspect that this would be hard to achieve over 30 seconds so may not have been an option for this entry)

Good work Dave, I look forward to seeing more of your work

Greetings from the Critique Club.

Hi Glen,

You have received some quite constructive comments from voters, most of which I agree with.

Eschelar has pointed out the character of the shot and I can see from your portfolio that the look that you captured was not accidental and you have captured some strong mood elements. The muted color and grain work very well in this shot and the veil of cloud over the moon adds a focal point

Some areas for potential improvement:

You state in your comments that you couldn't quite get the location that you were after, this tells me that maybe you settled for second best and your score has suffered.

The two light sources compete for attention, it would have improved the composition to keep one or the other but not both

The highlights are a little too harsh IMO. I see that your aperture was quite open, perhaps stopping down would have helped reduce the intensity and still allowed you hit 30 Seconds.

I think that the image would have benefited from a deeper black, silhouetting the trees.

Overall I think this is an interesting photo and meets the challenge, the problem is that often good photos don't particulalrly score highly. Most voters only spend a few seconds on each image and if you don't have the WOW factor they'll click a '4' and move on. Some people also view artifacts like noise as a negative and mark down for this. Noise is not to everyones taste.

Good luck in future challenges and keep up the night photography.

Nice shot, might have been better with less foreground. Pretty Summer scene though

Nice. Crying out for some post processing to really give it some punch, but excellent straight from camera shot. I really like this.. it should easily hit top 10 IMO

too small for real impact. It may have been better to include the entire firework if possible. Good use of flash to light the subject. These shots are very tricky to do.
